New Berlinville is a modest community anchored by history
Since its founding in 1835, New Berlinville has been considered a suburb of nearby Boyertown. As detailed by the town’s historical marker at the junction of Montgomery and North Reading Avenues, it was named for Berlin, Germany. The story goes that this name was chosen to honor an orphan boy who came from Berlin. “It’s a small area with a nice homey feel to it,” says Sami Jo Trout, assistant director at the Boyertown Community Library. “Living there, you probably won’t even have a New Berlinville address unless you get a P.O. box at the little post office.” The small town has not grown much over the years – one of the largest major developments was the construction of the Walmart Supercenter across Reading Avenue. Otherwise, New Berlinville retains much of its historic character and its sleepy charm.
Historic homes mix with newer builds on tree-shaded lots
New Berlinville has its share of historic properties, some dating to the 1860s. “I’d say it’’s mostly known for older Victorian homes, but there’s a good mix,” Trout says. Colonial Revivals from the early 1900s sit just down the street from raised ranch-style homes built in the 1980s and 1990s, with Cape Cods and cottages mixed in as well. Some lots are shaded by tall trees, and some are large enough to accommodate in-ground swimming pools. Depending on square footage, number of bedrooms and lot size, home prices can range from $190,000 to $725,000.
Boyertown High offers skiing and snowboarding club
The closest elementary school to New Berlinville is Colebrookdale Elementary, which receives a C-plus from Niche. Boyertown Area Middle earns a B-minus, and Boyertown Area Senior High is rated B. The high school offers a variety of clubs and activities, including a Ski and Snowboard club. School choice in the Boyertown Area School District is primarily governed by address, with no formal magnet programs or open enrollment. Transfers within or outside the district are subject to administrative review and may depend on space and program capacity.
Nearby YMCA and parks offer fitness amenities
New Berlinville is just up Reading Avenue from the Boyertown YMCA, which has basketball courts, a swimming pool, a fitness room and a sauna available for members. The Franklin Street Mini-Park offers a small playground, and the Boyertown Community Park features a disc golf course, a band shell and several covered picnic shelters.
Grocery stores and casual restaurants along Route 100 corridor
Residents of New Berlinville are just minutes from shopping options in Boyertown. “The Walmart Supercenter is right off of Route 100, but we also have a Giant, Redner’s and a Weis Markets close by,” Trout says. One of the nearest restaurants is Barrel and Ale, a steakhouse that serves contemporary American cuisine. “Most of your dining options are going to be along the main road in Boyertown,” Trout adds. These include Toss of the Town, a local soup and sandwich shop, and The Other Farm Brewing Company.
State highways provide access to Oley and Reading
Although surface streets like Reading Avenue are often more efficient, a prominent state highway cuts through New Berlinville and connects the community to Boyertown. “It’s very near Route 100, so it sees some traffic,” Trout says. “That’s going to be the main road people use to get around.” This highway also intersects with state Route 73, linking the community west to Oley and Reading.
