Shorewood-Tower Hills-Harbert is on the north side of Southwest Michigan’s Harbor Country, a region known for its upscale homes and artistic community. “It’s very rich in the arts,” says Lydia Heyn, a Realtor with Christie’s International Real Estate, who sells in the neighborhood. “A lot of big artists from Chicago move here, retire and open their own galleries.” Along with those galleries, the artistic community stands out through the neighborhood’s culinary scene, local shops and several events that celebrate creativity in this region of abundant woodlands and open Lake Michigan waters. They’re not all in one confined space, though. “The art scene is definitely more spread out and intertwined with nature,” Heyn says. Infusco Coffee is a dog-friendly local roaster where people go to hang out over lattes and pastries. Café Gulistan serves Middle Eastern food outside in a string-lit patio and garden. Greenbush Brewing Company offers a rustic, casual atmosphere for artisan grub and experimental beer. Locals can also mingle at The Historian’s cocktail bar or across the street at Local Pour’s wine bar. At Luisa’s Swedish Bakery & Market, people can enjoy breakfast and lunch in a farmhouse setting and purchase artisanal ingredients for cooking at home. Grocery shoppers can also get produce grown at Sawyer Garden Center and grab what they need from the local butcher at Falatics Meat Market. Unique treasures can be found at several antique stores, such as Vintage Finds, Sawyer Antique Mall and Harbert Antique Mall.

Art-themed events throughout the year
Several art-themed events are held throughout the year, including Art Attack and the Outsiders Outside Art Fair. Art Attack is held three days in April and allows local galleries and businesses to showcase their artistic talents. The fair is held at the Judith Racht Gallery, which showcases dozens of artists from around the country.
Dunes, nature trails and a community park
The nearly 2,000 acres of Warren Dunes State Park has people from all over the country visiting to hike and hang glide on the 260-foot sandy and forested dunes next to Lake Michigan. It’s also where locals go to relax on the beach and go for a swim. Nature enthusiasts head to Jens Jensen Preserve to wander among 45 acres of towering trees and wildlife. Residents head to Harbert Community Park to fish in the pond and play sand volleyball and little league baseball. During winter, the park opens an ice skating rink and provides skates for free.

A small student body at River Valley School District
Kindergarten through second-grade students attend Chikaming Elementary, which receives an A-minus grade from Niche. For third through fifth grade, they’ll head to B-minus-rated Three Oaks Elementary. This is a car-dependent community, as there is no public transportation. Residents have access to Interstate 94, which can be taken about 1.5 hours to Chicago and 3 hours to Detroit. South Bend is also about 45 minutes away, where travelers can fly out of South Bend International Airport.
