A forward-looking neighborhood with historic charm
On a November morning in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln boarded a train in Washington, D.C., bound for a battlefield in Pennsylvania where he would deliver his now-famous Gettysburg Address. He changed trains in Hanover Junction, Pennsylvania, but not before passing through the town of New Freedom, situated directly north of the Maryland-Pennsylvania border. The Northern Central Railway on which Lincoln’s train traveled was integral to the growth of New Freedom, and today, that same railway serves as the centerpiece of the Heritage Rail Trail that runs from New Freedom north to York. New Freedom is a town steeped in history, as evidenced by annual events such as the New Freedom Fest, an event that brings together artists, craftspeople, entertainers, and residents to celebrate small-town life and New Freedom’s colorful heritage. Going hand-in-hand with that appreciation of history, though, is a forward-looking community. “There is a lot of new development in New Freedom,” says Realtor Gina Baum, who is a native of the area and has been representing transactions there for 15 years. “There are a couple of new breweries and a lot of events throughout the year. It’s a historic town, but it’s also a very active population.”

Historic town, modern homes
While the town itself embraces history, the homes in the area are well-built and well-maintained; the median year of construction for homes in New Freedom is 1985, and the average single-family home is over 2,000 square feet. The median price of real estate in New Freedom is $400,000, and buyers should expect to pay an average of $157 per square foot. A cozy three-bedroom/one-bathroom colonial can sell for $175,000, and prices can go up to $715,000 for a five-bedroom/four-bathroom farmhouse-style home. “The prices tend to be a little higher in New Freedom than somewhere like York because it’s so close to Maryland,” says Baum. “But you also get a lot of house for your money there.”

New Freedom's panoply of parks
When they need to get outdoors, residents of New Freedom have three parks from which to choose. Marge Goodfellow Park is located in the center of New Freedom, and offers visitors access to a playground, athletic fields, tennis courts and basketball courts. Freedom Green Community Park is adjacent to the Heritage Museum of New Freedom, and serves as a quiet resting spot where visitors can sit on a bench and enjoy the scenery of historic downtown. In the southernmost part of the town, Arlington Ernst Park is a 19-acre wooded area with multiple hiking trails to explore and a picnic area for a little rest and relaxation. On the first Sunday afternoon of each month, the Heritage Museum of New Freedom opens its doors to the public, who are invited to come in and learn more about the town’s past.

Family-friendly dining at Seven Sports Bar and Grille
Because New Freedom is a little off the beaten path, so to speak, residents do need their own transportation. There is no mass transit in the area, and getting to shopping destinations does require traveling the 3 miles to Shrewsbury. There, shoppers will find Giant for their grocery needs and Walmart Supercenter for any home necessities. More intensive retail therapy can be found 20 miles north at York Galleria, with stores that include Boscov’s, Marshalls and American Eagle, among other retailers. York Galleria is also home to the Hollywood Casino York, which offers visitors a full range of slot machines, table games and sports betting opportunities. When dining out is on the menu, locals flock to Seven Sports Bar and Grille, a family-friendly, casual eatery offering everything from pierogies and salads to burgers, steaks and seafood.
