Small woodsy town tucked in the middle of New Hampshire
A rural town of about 2,400 people, New Hampton offers a woodsy lifestyle right in the center of New Hampshire. According to a community local and town office administrator, the area is a mix of paved roads and dirt roads with easy access to Interstate 93. She notes that, outside of the major Route 104 that goes through town, New Hampton maintains a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Branching off this two-lane highway are narrow backroads that lead to homes surrounded by firs and maple trees. “People choose New Hampton for the seclusion and woodsy feel, but it just takes 10 minutes to get to Meredith and the excitement nearby,” says Juli Kelley, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “When you want to be around people, you can, and when you want to be alone, you can.” The area neighbors Meredith, a well-visited harbor town on Lake Winnipesaukee, and the city of Laconia is about 12 miles away. There are smaller-scale adventures within New Hampton, including state forests and lakes, making the community a seasonal camping and RV escape. Another draw to the area is New Harbor School, a highly-rated co-ed boarding school located in the town’s center.

Serene hikes through George Duncan and Sky Pond
The north end of New Hampton kisses the shores of Lake Waukewan and the smaller Winona Lake, both of which offer public swimming and boating access. “These lakes are not as big as Lake Winnipesaukee, but sometimes these hidden gems are better because they’re not as crowded,” Kelley says. The rural woodlands throughout the rest of town feature a few state parks with trails and scenic summits, including George Duncan State Forest on the south side and Sky Pond State Forest to the north. Accessed behind the fire department in the town center area, New Hampton Nature-Fitness Trail is a popular spot for strolls along the Pemigewasset River. New Hampton has a reputation for being a wintertime destination, which Kelley says is due in part to the snowmobile paths through these marked forests and trails. However, the town is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts during the summer and fall seasons, too. Some of the many campgrounds and RV parks throughout New Hampton include Clearwater Campground and Hunter’s RV Run Park, both on the east side, and Davidson’s Countryside Campground on the west side.

Downtown colonials and cabin-ranch styles
Most homes in New Hampton feature winding driveways, some with detached garage space. There is a mix of styles, from quaint ranch-style homes nestled in the forest to historic 19th-century Colonials sitting proudly in the downtown area. There are also newly manufactured one-level homes and Farmhouses with Victorian influences on multiple acres of privacy. Single-family properties, many with expansive front porches and back balconies, range in size from 1,500 to 3,000 square feet and can cost between $325,000 and $800,000. “There are some more affordable homes for first-time homebuyers and a few in the upper price ranges,” says Kelley. “But the majority are in that in-between, $350,000 to $700,000 range,” which is about on par with New Hampshire’s 2024 average home price of $500,000. Prospective buyers can also purchase land throughout New Hampton, anywhere from 1 acre for $90,000 to 13 acres for $1 million.

No. 1 private high school, New Hampton School
Students can begin at New Hampton Community School, which receives a B-minus Niche grade, before advancing to Newfound Memorial Middle School, which receives a C. Newfound Regional High School earns a C-plus from Niche and offers participation in a Student-Staff Senate Program, which has multiple subcommittees and the mutual goal of student-teacher collaboration for a better school environment. New Hampton is also home to the campus of New Hampton School, a private co-ed boarding school established in 1821. This ninth through twelfth-grade preparatory institution receives an A grade from Niche and is ranked as the Best Private High School in Belknap County.

New Hampton history at The Common
The mostly quiet New Hampton community gets together annually on the second Saturday in August for Old Home Day, held at the Chapel Museum, locally known as the Historic Town House. The town office administrator highlights how the event offers a barbeque feast during the day and square dancing in the evening. However, the events change from year to year, depending on which town members are volunteering. This history museum, formerly the Advent Chapel Church, is open to the public on Saturdays. While the Chapel Museum is no longer used as a church, there is one active and prominent house of worship in town, located in what residents call The Common. The steeple of New Hampton Community Church can be seen from a distance as it peeks slightly above the treetops. The New Hampton Historical Society put together a self-guided Main Street Walking Tour that showcases 40 historical homes and buildings along Main Street and The Common. One stop on the tour is Gordon-Nash Library, the first public library in Belknap County, established in 1895.
Local dining on Route 104
New Hampshire State Route 104 weaves east to west through New Hampton, where some local and beloved eateries serve the community. 104 Diner dishes out classic American breakfast, lunch and dinner in an old-school ‘50s-style boxcar. Further west down the highway, Homestead offers more upscale dining in a rustic lodge atmosphere. “There are some popular dining spots, but for the most part, people are going into Meredith,” Kelley says. The neighboring town offers Italian waterfront dining at Lago and wine tasting at Hermit Woods Winery. Mill Falls Marketplace is an open-air shopping mall with niche boutiques and cafes. Also in Meredith, residents can grab groceries at Hannaford.

Convenient commutes on Interstate 93
In addition to the small-town atmosphere, residents are attracted to New Hampton for its easy access to Interstate 93. This major thoroughfare runs through the center of town, leading to the city of Concord about 30 miles south. New Hampshire State Route 104 also conveniently intersects through the community, taking motorists to Meredith just 8 miles east or to the city of Laconia, about 12 miles southeast.
