Edgewood
Edgewood Park is a big draw
Over the years, Edgewood Park has remained a landmark attraction in the neighborhood and has evolved with the times. “Right now, pickleball is the most popular amenity,” says Stephanie FitzGerald, a 40-year Edgewood resident and a longtime member of Friends of Edgewood Park, a volunteer group that, in cooperation with the city, helps maintain the park. The park completely rebuilt the tennis courts in 2022 and restriped some of them to be dedicated solely to pickleball. Edgewood Park hosts the weekly CitySeed Edgewood Park Farmers' Market and offers the only skate park in the city, a draw for older kids. Younger kids enjoy the playground, and those looking for a walk find it on the trails that wind under dense tree coverage. The pond underwent a major renovation in 2009, with raised wooden bridges replacing old concrete walkways and native plant species added to help restore proper vegetation. The Edgewood Park Sundial, a massive sculpture in the park’s southern tip, has a sprinkler that kids can play in on hot summer days.Shopping and dining inside and just outside the neighborhood
Residents have many options for shopping and dining, especially in nearby Westville, where a stretch of popular locally owned shops and restaurants sit along Whalley Avenue. Westville General is a general store where patrons can choose from a mix of food, home essentials, and gifts. Bella's Café is a small café that has been serving American classics since 2000 and is a local favorite. "If you go there on a Sunday, you're waiting anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour for their brunch," Dayle says. Within the neighborhood, residents dine out at Mama Mary’s for soul food and Ladle and Loaf for kosher soups and salads. They pick up groceries at Stop and Shop and Edge of the Woods Market, a family-owned health food store that has been serving the community since 1977.A mix of charming vintage homes
Most of Edgewood's residents are renters—about 82%—and live in the many large historic Colonial Revival and Queen Anne-style homes that line the neighborhood's streets. These homes were converted to multi-family units years ago, but the exteriors still feature traditional design elements like large front porches and steeply pitched roofs. Single-family versions of these homes can be hard to come by, but when they do hit the market, they generally range from the high $400,000s to the mid $500,000s and feature recent renovations. Residents landscape their compact front lawns with bushes and small trees, which, combined with the tall trees lining the streets, add pops of green to the semi-urban landscape. Sidewalks are plentiful, allowing residents to walk to nearby parks, restaurants and stores.Regarding crime, Edgewood scores a five out of 10 on the CAP Index, one point higher than the national average. This number includes a seven out of 10 for homicides. However, in the last few years, the city has seen a trending decrease in shootings, from 141 gunshot victims in 2020 to 99 in 2023. City leaders attribute this decline to getting more illegal guns off the streets.

From there, they can continue to James Hillhouse High School, which serves about 1,100 students from ninth through 12th grade and has a C-minus on Niche. It has a student-teacher ratio of 14-to-1. It was established in 1859 and is New Haven’s oldest public high school. Families considering private education for their kids have a variety of faith-based schools in the area to choose from, as well as the Cedarhurst School, a therapeutic school for students with behavioral health needs operated by the Yale Department of Psychiatry.Less than 2 miles from downtown New Haven and Yale University
Edgewood is less than 2 miles from downtown New Haven and Yale University's campus, so university employees don't have to go far for work. Highway access is limited from Edgewood, but to the west, residents can pick up Route 15, which runs north towards Hartford and south towards Milford. The CT Transit bus line runs throughout the neighborhood and into Westville and downtown New Haven, with multiple stops along main thoroughfares, including Whalley Avenue, Edgewood Avenue, and Chapel Street.
