A rocky start

Rockland Township in Berks County was first settled in 1758, given its name because of the rocky land that initially made the land unsuitable for farming. The German settlers that inhabited the area had to find a different way to earn their livelihood and eventually figured out how to run mills powered by the area's many creeks. Today, the township is predominantly agricultural, though some historic mills and large rock formations remain. Houses in the area are spread out, and most who live here enjoy a peaceful life in large lots set on quiet country streets. Residents can head a few miles to the nearby towns of Fleetwood, Topton and Kutztown for small-town amenities. And Reading is 13 miles away, offering large hospitals and an airport.

Private country living

Roads through Drysville and Boyers Junction have closer-spaced stone houses from the late nineteenth century, offering the feeling of living in a small village. But most homes in Rockland have at least a half-acre of land and are separate from neighbors by stretches of farmland and forest. Ranch-style homes start at $200,000, getting up to $300,000 for four-bedroom homes. Contemporary farmhouses and Colonial-inspired properties go for $400,000, offering the feel of a private lodge with lots over an acre set back on private roads. Properties with 5 acres go for around $500,000, and $600,000 will get a luxury country home with over ten acres.

Enjoying the outdoors in Rockland

Boyer's Junction has a park with creekside walking trails. And the small villages of Lyons and Bowers just north of the township offer parks with playgrounds and sports fields. But most land in the area is undeveloped, and many residents enjoy heading to the State Game Lands to the west for hunting. The Rockland Rod and Gun Club also offers a shooting range and holds regular events like poker nights and pig roasts. Near Dryville, two prominent rock features, Shott's Head and Guinther's Head, offer large and interestingly balanced boulders. Some residents even make their living off rocks; the township has a marble mill and granite manufacturer.

Local schools with virtual options

The area is served by the Brandywine Heights Area School District, a tightly knit community thanks to a class size average of 11 students per teacher. The district includes Brandywine Heights Elementary School and Brandywine Heights Intermediate School, both receiving a B-plus grade from Niche. Brandywine Heights High School is rated C-plus and is home to less than 500 students. The district also offers a virtual academy, which can be used for a full cyber-education or a blended approach. There are also remote and in-person dual enrollment classes offered with several colleges, including Kutztown University, which is a few miles north.

Nearby small towns

"Rockland is a quiet rural area; there isn't much in the way of community centers out there," says Heather Wicke, the director of the Brandywine Community Library. The library is 5 miles away in Topton but also serves the Rockland Township, offering weekly clubs, children's storytime, computers and free Wi-Fi. “The teen program is popular; they enjoy spending Monday afternoons at the library because there is not a lot else to do in the area.” Topton also has a popular Halloween parade. Kutztown, 6 miles north, is home to the oldest folk festival in the United States, celebrating the Pennsylvania Dutch heritage in the region. Kutztown University also puts on theater performances, and the small town offers several boutiques and restaurants. And Fleetwood, 3 miles away, is the closest place for daily amenities like grocery stores, doctors' offices and a post office.

Local restaurants

At the heart of Rockland, the New Jerusalem Inn offers a wide selection of beers on tap and is known for live music events and karaoke nights. The stone building, built in 1816, is decorated with plants and vintage furniture and can be rented out for events. And don't forget to say hi to the Inn's most beloved employee, Oscar the pig. Up toward Lyons, Liberty at Dryville has classic pub food, and Snuzzles for Italian food is a best-kept local secret. The Market at Boyer's Junction offers coffee and breakfast as well as antique shopping. Residents several miles head over to Fleetwood for Boyer's Food Market to stock up on groceries.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
