An urban enclave with naval bases and highways close at hand
Separated from downtown by Interstate 95 and only blocks from the United State Coast Guard Academy, East New London is an urban enclave convenient for military workers or anyone looking for lower-cost housing near downtown New London. “The Coast Guard Academy is right there,” says Mary Poola, a real estate broker with William Raveis, who has sold homes in the area for over 40 years. “The neighborhood is driven by value. Homes are affordable, and investors often buy in the area because multi-unit properties are available, too. The neighborhood has its restaurants and businesses, or you can bike or take the bus downtown.” The Naval Submarine Base New London is nearby, too. General Dynamics Electric Boat, one of the largest employers in town and maker of state-of-the-art submarines, is only 3 miles across the river and south. “It all adds up to value,” Poola says. “In East New London, you get affordability, quality of life, and convenience, which is a wise investment choice.”

Historic homes and newer townhouses for under $300,000
Many homes in East New London were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most feature wooden clapboard construction with front porches and narrow lots. The landscape here is urban, so front yards are small and streets are lined with sidewalks. Single-family homes are often two- and three-bedroom houses that have been cared for by homeowners for many years. “The homes in East New London are older with a lot of quirky charm,” Poola says. “They’re eclectic and often referred to as colonial or two-story.” Newer luxury townhouses have also been built along Crystal Avenue near McKinley Park. They feature hardwood floors, rooftop decks and large garages with extra storage. Multi-family homes converted from older colonials also come on the market and attract investors. Whether built in 1910 or 2010, East New London properties list for between $200,000 and $300,000.
