Philly flavor in a Midwest outpost
New Philadelphia honors its Pennsylvania namesake with more than just a name. The grid layout of the city's downtown was influenced by Philadelphia, a post office was modeled after Independence Hall, and locals can even grab a cheesesteak at mainstay J-N-G Grill. Founded 122 years after Philadelphia, New Philadelphia has grown into a centrally located Ohio community of 17,700. It offers accessibly priced homes, multiple major employers, an active arts scene and a unique public park. “Affordability is a draw, and it sounds cliche, but it really is a great place to raise children,” Shonda Davis, a Realtor with Keller Williams Legacy Group. “I would say it’s safe. It’s a small town where people look out for each other. There’s a strong sense of community. A lot of people might move away, but many people will move back. And I will say that as I’m one of those people. I actually did that twice.”
Classic homes from the turn of the 20th century
Many of New Philadelphia’s homes date to around the turn of the 20th century, an era of significant growth in the area. The city’s population jumped 249% between 1880 to 1920, from about 3,000 to roughly 10,700. These classic houses come in a medley of shapes and sizes. “You’re seeing Dutch colonials, regular colonials, two-story stick houses,” Davis says The condition of these homes varies, so the price tags can differ quite a bit — anywhere from $45,000 to $375,000. Recent construction, though limited, is available in developments like Deerfield and Oak Shadows for $300,000 to $600,000. The median price here is about $192,500.
A variety of home styles, including American Foursquares and colonials, can be found around New Philadelphia.

Tuscora Park doubles as an amusement park
Tuscora Park is the crown jewel of New Philadelphia’s park system. This sprawling space on the city’s north end includes multiple playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts, and athletic fields, but it also doubles as an amusement park. It has carnival rides, mini golf and pools that are open from May to September. “You won't find those kinds of parks often,” Davis says. “It is very unique.” Tuscarora hosts multiple community events, too, including First Town Days, a multi-day Fourth of July festival with a car show, talent show, wiffle ball tournament, fireworks and more. Also Summer Showcase, a series of outdoor concerts on Sundays from May to September. The area’s climate cycles through four distinct seasons, with an average of almost 40 inches of snow annually.

New Philadelphia’s downtown offers a colorful experience
The city has pushed for continued revitalization of its downtown, a walkable district around Broadway Street and High Avenue names that are another salute to Philadelphia. Downtown has an assortment of local businesses and restruants including, J-N-G Grill is the oldest sports bar in New Philadelphia. There’s a series of more than a dozen murals around downtown, many were completed within the last 10 years. “There is a very alive and well arts district, so to speak,” Davis says. “And some really distinguished artists in our area.” Art on the Alley celebrates the city’s art scene, a twice-yearly event downtown with dozens of vendors and live entertainment. New Towne, on Mill Avenue, is a mall with more than 40 retailers and is surrounded by multiple chain restaurants about a mile south of downtown.

Football is a big deal at New Philadelphia High
The New Philadelphia City Schools system carries a B on Niche. Its high school, the B-minus-rated New Philadelphia High, has a rich football heritage. College Football Hall of Famer Woody Hayes coaching career blossomed here, before he became a legend at Ohio State, where he won three national championships. The football stadium is named after Hayes and has a long-running rivalry with Dover High that dates back more than 120 years. Dover High is 3 miles away on the north side of the Tuscarawas River. “We can often kid about being on the right side of the river,” Davis says. The B-plus-rated Tuscarawas Central Catholic Junior/Senior High School is a private option in town with seventh through 12 grades.
Kent State University Tuscarawas is one of eight Kent State campuses in Ohio. The school offers bachelor and associate degree programs, including focuses in animation game design to veterinary technology.
