Wykagyl Country Club
Single-family homes near the golf course, plus condos and co-ops
The community’s 1980s bi-level, split-level and colonial-style homes are in the Wykagyl Estates subdivision, which sits on the golf course’s east side. While the homes here don’t have golf course views, they sit along quiet streets and are surrounded by mature greenery. Home prices typically range from around $800,000 to $1.2 million, depending on condition, plus annual homeowners association fees of around $300 that provide access to the community tennis court. On the other side of the golf course, low-rise condos and mid-rise co-op buildings sit next to commercial areas along busy North Avenue. Prices vary by size, with condos ranging from $230,000 to $700,000, plus monthly HOA fees between $200 and $700, and co-op units from $120,000 to $500,000, plus $450 to $950 in monthly HOA fees.Specialized programs at New Rochelle schools
Local kids can start school at William B. Ward Elementary, which earns a B-plus from Niche, and then attend the A-minus-rated Albert Leonard Middle. At the A-minus-rated New Rochelle High, students can enroll in specialized programs, including the Science Research program where kids conduct independent research and the Performing and Visual Arts Education program where kids can study subjects like theater, orchestra and dance. The A-rated Ursuline School, a girls’ Catholic school for Grades 6 through 12, is also nearby. An exclusive golf club and public parks offer ways to get outside
The invitation-only Wykagyl Country Club is in the community’s center and offers members and their guests a Donald Ross-designed golf course, social events and exclusive restaurants. Twin Lakes County Park nearby has forested hiking trails. “It has a pond and some benches, though you’ll get pestering geese coming to you if you have food,” Chen says. The park is also home to Twin Lakes Farm, Westchester’s largest equestrian center, where kids can take lessons and compete in horse shows. Ward Acres Park is another nearby natural area with walking paths, plus a dog park and community garden with rentable plots.Local and national restaurants in nearby shopping centers
The area’s commercial district sits at the corner of North Avenue and Quaker Ridge Road. Here, local restaurants like The Wooden Spoon, which serves brunch in a rustic atmosphere, sit next to national chains like Starbucks. Quaker Ridge Bagels makes fresh bagels daily and offers a variety of lunch sandwiches, and Da Giorgio serves upscale Italian cuisine. Acme Markets sells groceries in the neighborhood, and other nearby grocery stores include Stop & Shop and Cherry Lawn Farm.Car and train routes to New York City, bus service around Westchester
North Avenue leads about 2 miles to downtown New Rochelle. The Hutchinson River Parkway and Interstate 95 nearby lead about 20 miles to New York City. At the New Rochelle train station, commuters can take the train to Grand Central Station. “It’s about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on whether you get on the express train or not,” Chen says. The Bee-Line bus system has routes around Westchester County, and sidewalks make the area pedestrian-friendly. Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital is 2 miles away. The Westchester County Airport offers domestic flights 13 miles away, and John F. Kennedy International Airport is a 22-mile trip. The annual Frederick J. Todora Golf Event
Though membership to the private Wykagyl Country Club is invitation-only, residents can play the course without a membership at the annual Frederick J. Todora Golf Event each October. Players will have to pay a fee, but the event includes a round of golf, course snacks and a cocktail reception.
