Bouchelle Island
Riverside Park is a top spot for anglers and community events
Given its diminutive size, Bouchelle Island doesn't contain any neighborhood parks or gathering places aside from the Bouchelle Island Club House and the community tennis courts. Still, outdoor recreation is only a short drive away. Just across the river, Riverside Park serves as a hub for New Smyrna Beach residents of all ages. Kids get the wiggles out at the playground while anglers reel in fish along the boardwalk. The park also hosts a summer concert series, as well as the annual Images: A Festival for the Arts. On Saturdays, locals flock to the New Smyrna Beach Farmers Market — a community staple since 1991 — between Old Fort Park and City Hall. And, of course, there's the obvious: "When you live on Bouchelle Island, you're five minutes from having your toes in the sandy white beaches of New Smyrna Beach," Schwarz says. New Smyrna Beach has been named one of America's top surfing towns by Surfer Magazine. However, beachgoers should be wary of sharks. Dubbed the "shark bite capital of the world," New Smyrna Beach alone accounted for half of the shark attacks in all of Florida in 2023.Condos and large riverside estates catch the eye in Bouchelle Island
Bouchelle Island is a tale of two communities in one. On the west side, large estates with Mediterranean-style architecture and private docks line Richmond Drive alongside smaller ranch-style homes with covered swimming pools. Meanwhile, condos reign supreme on the east end along Bouchelle Drive, offering picturesque views of the Indian River's sparkling waters. Detached homes regularly price well into the millions, while a two-bedroom riverfront condo can range between $300,000 and $600,000.River Deck offers acclaimed seafood and river views
Good eats are right around the corner from Bouchelle Island. East of the South Causeway, Norwood's is one of the more unique restaurants in the area, serving cocktails and an array of different cuisines out of a treehouse bar. Neighboring the New Smyrna Beach City Marina, River Deck is another area staple. Known for its seafood, the waterside eatery is revered for its views of the river and live musical performances. Residents can also pick up ingredients for home-cooked meals from Publix at Indian River Village. Additional shopping options can be found along Canal Street in the New Smyrna Beach Historic District. Included in the National Register of Historic Places, the Canal corridor is lined with locally owned shops and art galleries alongside acclaimed restaurants.Students can take dual enrollment courses at New Smyrna Beach High
Students are served by Volusia County Schools. Kids may attend Coronado Beach Elementary School, which earns an overall grade of B-plus from Niche, or the B-minus-rated New Smyrna Beach Middle School 3 miles southeast on South Myrtle Avenue. Teens attend New Smyrna Beach High School, which neighbors the middle school. Earning a B grade, the high school offers dual enrollment courses along with several specialized academies, including the Criminal Justice Academy and the Medical Academy.Traffic can be heavy when tourists visit the area
Bouchelle Island is small, so it is walkable. However, residents will likely need a car for trips outside of the neighborhood. Public transportation options are scarce, but locals enjoy solid access to Route 1, which runs a mile west, and State Road 44. Given the area's regular influx of vacationers, though, traffic can be heavy at times.Residents should be wary during hurricane season
Surrounded by water, Bouchelle Island is in a flood zone and has been impacted by hurricanes in the past. In 2022, Hurricane Ian ravaged much of New Smyrna Beach, dumping 21 inches of rain over the area within 24 hours. Residents are advised to assemble emergency kits in preparation for hurricane season.
