Central Beach
Cruising up and down Flagler Avenue
While the area’s oceanfront may draw people in droves, the real star of the neighborhood is Flagler Avenue, which connects the two ends of Central Beach and is lined with eateries and shops. In fact, according to Lindsey Baldwin, Realtor with Collado Real Estate, “People choose to move to Central Beach because it’s within walking distance of Flagler Avenue.” Locals frequent Cafe Verde, a colorful establishment serving all-natural, locally sourced cafe fare with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. Clancy’s Cantina, a beach-themed Tex-Mex restaurant, is another beloved staple with over 30 years in the community. For dinner, people head to The Grille at Riverview for views of Indian River North or The Breakers Oceanfront Restaurant and Bar to gaze out at the Atlantic. Even with so many places to eat, sometimes people want a homecooked meal. For fresh ingredients, shoppers head to Publix Super Market at Indian River Village Shopping Center on the other side of East 3rd Avenue.Getting festive in Central Beach
The community comes together every month for events, like the Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday Parade. Participating local businesses throw beads down their floats into the awaiting crowd, and neighbors enjoy themed music and food. In May, the New Smyrna Beach Blues Festival gets people moving to the rhythm for three days straight. Various artists perform, including bands from New Smyrna Beach Middle School and High School. During December, events like Light Up Flagler and The Flagler Avenue Christmas Crazy Cart Parade ring in the holiday season with festive cheer.Coastal condos and cottages
Like the neighborhood’s wide range of events, homes in Central Beach come in just as much variety. Ranches, bungalows and Craftsman-style cottages decked out in cheery, brightly colored paint jobs stretch across the entirety of the neighborhood. Nautical, coastal and Mediterranean themes decorate these homes' exteriors, from surfboard sculptures to lighthouse-like rooftop lookouts. Closer to the beach, towering, sand-colored condos line the coast. Whether a beachside condo, inland cottage or riverside mansion, listings typically range between $500,000 and $2 million.Cambridge courses at New Smyrna Beach High
School buses charter students to Coronado Beach Elementary School, which has a B-plus score on Niche. The school offers an Extended Day Enrichment Program, which includes fee-based afterschool activities such as homework monitoring, music, arts and crafts, computer skills and field trips. Older students move on to New Smyrna Beach Middle School, which has a B-minus on Niche, and ultimately graduate from New Smyrna Beach High School. The school has a score of B and is the fourth-best public high school in Volusia County. Students can take Advanced Placement, Career and Technical Education, dual enrollment and Cambridge Pre-AICE (IGCSE) courses alongside their core curriculum.Kayaking Callalisa Creek
After school, Detwiler Park on Oakwood Avenue has a playground for kids to get their energy out and basketball courts where teens like to gather for a game. For those who want to hit the calm waters of Callalisa Creek, Callalisa Park has a launch spot for kayakers, canoers and paddle boarders. People also like to fish from the creek's shores or host a picnic with friends by the water. And, of course, there are plenty of beach access points and beachside parks along the neighborhood’s coast. Unsurprisingly, most locals spend their time outside lounging on the beach, swimming in the ocean and walking the boardwalk. And if they’re not at the beach, they’re probably boating up and down Indian River North.Getting to the mainland
Public transportation isn’t available outside the mainland, and while the neighborhood is walkable and bikeable, those aren’t always the most practical choices. However, getting around isn’t as difficult as it may seem. Flagler Avenue, which connects to North Causeway Drawbridge, and East 3rd Avenue, which becomes South Causeway, lets locals “get out west pretty easily compared to the other areas closer to the beach,” Baldwin says. And when residents need to take a trip out of town, New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport is only 5 1/2 miles away.
