Relaxed Florida vibes
Low-key bungalows, shady palms and paved pathways engulfed by thick bushes are hallmarks of Ellison Acres, a community near New Smyrna Beach. In this laid-back area, enclosed neighborhoods of one-story homes sit across the highway from Florida strip malls. Small lizards scale residential windows, picnics happen in a park next to 19th-century ruins and tall trees with Spanish moss protect ranch-style houses from the unrelenting Florida heat.

One-story houses in bright colors
Most homes in Ellison Acres are single-story builds, and some date back to the 1950s. But since Florida weather can be harsh, older homes get plenty of routine updates. Price is a big reason people move to the area, says Wendy Schwoerer, broker at Land and Sea Realty. Home prices range between $250,000 and $578,000. “Before the storm, homes sold in the mid-200s, from $230,000 to $250,000,” says Schwoerer. Ranch-style houses with stucco and bungalows with low-pitched roofs and picture windows are typical. Houses sit next to each other on quiet streets, and fences made of wood and chain links separate some properties from each other. Most homes have driveways, but some locals park in the grass or street.
