A small urban community rooted in education, culture and industry
Once a hub of manufacturing and shipping in the late 19th century, Manhattanville–sometimes called “West Harlem"–is a compact and dynamic neighborhood with strong ties to longstanding educational and cultural institutions. Converted warehouses and its iconic Riverside Drive Viaduct reflect its industrial past, and Columbia University and City College of New York are a huge presence, drawing students, faculty, alumni and businesses to serve them. “It’s like a little village,” says Ann Ferguson, a broker who lived in the area for eight years. “People like the calm of being out of the fray of the city. Manhattanville offers a really nice lifestyle,” says Mitchell Simmons, a broker with Compass who has worked in the neighborhood for more than a decade.

A diversity of styles and price points
The array of architectural styles and eras represented in Manhattanville’s relatively small footprint is impressive. Former industrial warehouses mingle with the landmarked Neo-Gothic buildings of City College and public housing towers. Pre- and postwar co-ops contrast with the gleaming additions to the Columbia University campus by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Housing stock varies widely, too. In Morningside Gardens, a complex of income-restricted postwar co-ops, home prices range from $300,000 to $900,000, depending on size and renovations. Prewar co-ops, some along Riverside Drive, list for about $400,00 to $800,000. Spacious new condominiums with fine finishes and park views typically found at the neighborhood’s southern border, list for about $1.5 to $3 million.

On the edge, but easily accessed
While a bit removed from the heart of Manhattan, the area enjoys easy and convenient access to it. The local 1 train in the area’s southwest corner runs the entirety of Manhattan’s west side. For express trains and travel to the outer boroughs, the A, B, C and D can be caught at 125th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, a 10-minute walk, or short crosstown bus ride away. The Henry Hudson Parkway provides a quick escape out of the city by car.

A strong charter and special programs
Manhattanville’s KIPP Infinity Charter School for students kindergarten through Grade 12 is considered one of the best charter schools in the city by Niche, which gives it an A rating. The arts play a significant role in the elementary curriculum and AP classes are available to students in upper grades. John H. Finley, for children ages three to Grade 8, offers Spanish dual language and Gifted and Talented programs. Niche gives it a B rating.

Reliable favorites in the neighborhood include El Nuevo Tina for delicious and affordable Dominican food and cozy French bistro Maison Harlem. Pasticci serves Italian dishes in a stylish setting, Dear Mama is a light-filled all-day cafe and event space and Dinosaur Bar-B-Que operates a riverside outpost. Significant waterside facilities and smaller green spots
Residents of Manhattanville have access to an eclectic mix of spaces for outdoor recreation, including the West Harlem Piers, which offer spots for strolling, fishing and taking in sunset river views. Nearby facilities in Riverside Park include tennis courts and playgrounds. A few blocks north, the 28-acre Riverbank State Park contains athletic fields, a swimming pool, ice skating and roller skating rinks and an amphitheater.
