Legendary commercial area now a destination for homebuyers
Office buildings tower over Midtown East, with glass skyscrapers next to iconic buildings from the early 20th century, like the Chrysler Building. The area offers gourmet restaurants and high-end shopping, but has fewer essentials than other parts of Midtown. It has only recently become a popular place to live. “It’s now a destination,” says Suzan Kremer, a Douglas Elliman broker who has been working in the area since 2008. It's not as touristy as some of its neighbors, although they flock to Grand Central Terminal, at the southern edge of the neighborhood.

Michelin-starred restaurants and Madison Avenue shopping
Midtown East is home to legendary restaurants such as the subterranean Grand Central Oyster Bar, with its arched ceilings, or La Grenouille, an upscale French eatery that’s been in business for over 60 years. For a Nordic-inspired, seafood-heavy menu, there’s Michelin-starred Aquavit, and Bobby Van’s is a destination for steaks in the landmarked Helmsley Building. The neighborhood is also famous for its boutiques and department stores. Brands like Celine and Fendi line Madison Avenue, while Fifth Avenue is home to flagship stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Tiffany & Co. Ultralux stores such as Dior, Burberry and Yves Saint Laurent can be found on East 57th Street. Daily essentials are harder to find, but Whole Foods and Morton Williams both have locations on Second Avenue. There are food halls like Urbanspace in the neighborhood, and several fast-casual restaurants at Grand Central.

From hotel living to new highrises
Midtown East’s side streets are quieter than the avenues, offering a more residential vibe. “There are so many new highrises. The versatility and the array of property and opportunity is tremendous,” Kremer says. “Some people want views. And then there are people who want privacy and don’t want that doorman. Others really love hotel living, where they have all the services.” Places like The Towers of the Waldorf Astoria, The Plaza Hotel and The St. Regis Residences give residents all the services of a hotel at home, from cleaning to room service. Views and contemporary living can be found in new towers such as The Centrale on East 50th Street. A studio in a co-op in the neighborhood starts around $350,000, with a studio in a condo going for more like $650,000. A three-bedroom co-op ranges from $1.2 million to $3 million and up, while a condo of the same size starts at $5 million. There are also super high-end residences, such as 432 Park Avenue, where a penthouse was asking $105 million in June 2024.

Walkable to Central Park and Bryant Park
Central Park is just north of Midtown East, with the zoo, the walking paths and pond of the Hallett Nature Sanctuary nearby. Bryant Park, which offers tables and chairs, summer activities and a winter market, is at the southern end of the neighborhood. It's right next to the main branch of the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue, a Beaux-Arts landmark dating to 1911. Patience and Fortitude, a pair of marble lions, flank its entrance.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade
The New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, the largest and oldest in the world, marches along Fifth Avenue every year, passing the cathedral with the same name. Approximately 150,000 people participate, and about 2 million come out to watch.
Connect to the City from Grand Central Terminal
Grand Central Terminal connects residents to the rest of the city, including John F. Kennedy Airport, and is a major hub for commuters. A number of subways serve the area, including the 4, 5 and 6 trains and the E and F. There are also several buses in the neighborhood.

Students can attend the modern P.S. 59 Beekman Hill International School from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, which gets an A rating from Niche.
