Rural charm with urban access
Located just an hour outside of Boston, Newbury offers perhaps the most genuine slice of rural life one can find—while remaining near to a major metropolitan area, at least. For those looking for a peaceful place to live, Newbury is one of the best options in the area. “The area is very quiet and very agrarian,” says Dolores Person, real estate agent and resident of Newbury. “It’s an old-school lifestyle in a very quaint town—everybody is laid back and to themselves,” says Person. With plenty of its historical agrarian charm still present to this day, Newbury offers residents the chance to step back into a simpler life.

Antique First Period homes
While there are a few other “rural” areas outside of Boston, Newbury exudes a more authentic rural life—thanks in large part to its focus on farming. Since it’s founding in 1635, the area has remained agrarian in nature and the town still reflects this. Houses in the area are generally considered “antique” with First Period influences—if they aren’t genuine First Period builds, that is. With a healthy number of colonial-style homes as well, walking down a street in Newbury may lead one to believe they’ve stepped back in time.

Natural beauty all around
Thanks to the unique geographic layout of Newbury, residents are able to enjoy the three distinct “villages” that make up Newbury—Old Town, Byfield, and Plum Island. As such, a day for residents can start by dropping off the kids at a school in Old Town, before they go to the library in Byfield, and end their morning with a walk on the beach near Plum Island. “It’s a simple, quiet place, with a lot of farmland and conservation in the area,” says Person. “There aren’t a lot of businesses even, and you have to drive up to Newburyport for things like restaurants.” Far from an inconvenience, though, residents in the area are glad for the lifestyle—especially considering how close Boston is. “People are really laidback and reserved in Newbury, and it’s easy to get up to Boston for things you can’t get nearby—so it’s really nice,” says Person.

Pick up produce at Tendercrop Farm
For those who like the idea of getting their produce at nearby farmstands—like Newbury’s Tendercrop Farm, for instance, which features its own chicken, beef, pork, and produce—or appreciating the history of farming throughout the years at historic sites such as Spencer-Pierce-Little Farm, Newbury represents an opportunity to turn back the clock and appreciate the simpler life—all without having to give up proximity to Boston.
