The Newington Community Association is very active and meets once a month. They monitor things like how long holiday decorations can stay up (no more than 30 days before or after the holiday) and how tall grass can be (no more than 6 inches), as well as address community concerns, including fallen trees or parking issues. In the summer, kids splash in the NCA Community Pool, while parents chill on lounge chairs and towels. The nearby Newington Community Association Ball Field is well-maintained and surrounded by woodlands and streams. This is a great place for a casual game of soccer or volleyball. Hannah Hutton with Fairfax County Park Authority notes that all county park amenities are available to anyone regardless of residence. “Fairfax County Park Authority has 420 parks and 325 miles of trails,” she says. The Gerry Connolly Cross Country Trail, which runs roughly 40 miles through Fairfax County, is a popular spot for a run or wooded walk. A smaller portion of the trail – the Pohick Stream Valley Trail – runs through Newington for 3 miles along Pohick Stream. The trail varies in steepness; it is paved in some areas and unpaved in others. Rollingwood Park is a great place to take the kids after school, where little ones can run around on the playground while teenagers play games of pick-up on basketball courts. Nearby Middle Run Stream Valley Park and South Run Stream Valley Park, where amenities include the great outdoors, offer scenic escapes and even more trails. And to hit the links, locals can head to Fort Belvoir Golf Course.
