Newport is a riverside city with charming homes

A quiet community along the Mississippi River, Newport offers small-town charms about 12 miles from downtown Saint Paul. The area’s ramblers and New Traditional homes tend to be more expensive than in other riverside communities. There are several parks where residents can play sports and attend city events, and plenty of restaurants and shops are within a few miles. Area students are served by a highly rated district.

What homeowners often pay for ramblers and New Traditional homes

Newport's housing market leans heavily toward single-family homes. Some are ramblers, cottages and Craftsman-style homes built in the early and mid-1900s, and these can range from the lower $200,000s to the lower $500,000s. In more recent years, the city has added New Traditional homes that often run from the mid-$400,000s to the mid-$600,000s. The city tends to be more expensive than nearby communities like South Saint Paul and Saint Paul Park, but less expensive than Woodbury. The area feels suburban thanks to its tree-lined streets and grassy front yards, which can also feature bushes and small plants. Most residential roads don’t have sidewalks, but you’ll still see residents walking their pets, and kids often ride their bikes to a friend’s house.

Quickly get to Saint Paul and Minneapolis

Interstate 494 and U.S. highways 10 and 61 run through Newport, helping drivers reach Saint Paul and the greater Twin Cities area. Downtown Saint Paul is just over 10 miles away, a drive that usually takes 15 to 25 minutes. Downtown Minneapolis, roughly 20 miles away, is a 25- to 50-minute drive. Some residents work in those cities, while others hold jobs with transportation companies or the Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s oil refinery just outside of town. The Metro Transit 345 bus stops at the Newport Transit Station and can get riders to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport Transit Station in close to 25 minutes.

There's plenty of green space to enjoy

There’s plenty of green space for residents to explore. “Newport, per capita, has more parks than any community around here,” says Joe Hatch, Newport’s city administrator. “A lot of folks love to enjoy the parks and the mature trees.” Bailey School Forest Park is an 80-acre space with hiking trails, and it is popular with cross-country skiers each winter. Loveland Park has sports courts, batting cages, skating rinks and picnic pavilions. Furry friends have a space of their own at the Newport Dog Park. There are also overlooks where people can relax and reflect while taking in views of the Mississippi River.
