Post-WWII community with comparatively lower-priced homes
Right off Jefferson Avenue, Beaconsdale is a Newport News area offering homes for a lower price compared to surrounding neighborhoods. Houses in the community started going up during World War II in an effort to provide more housing for shipyard workers and their families. In 1958, Newport News and Warwick merged to form modern-day Newport News, which still offers convenient access to Hampton Roads’ military jobs. “People move to the area to be close to the military bases,” says Danielle Kearns, a Realtor with RE/MAX Peninsula, who’s been selling homes in the area for five years. “Riverside Regional and Christopher Newport University are also big employers close by.”
Ranch-style homes and Cape Cods starting in the $200,000s
Homebuyers can find 1950s and later ranch-style homes and Cape Cods on modestly sized lots. Some homes feature driveways and detached garages, while others rely on street parking. “The homes here are older and smaller, but also less expensive,” says Kearns. Homes tend to stay on the market for around six weeks and typically sell for $200,000 to $350,000.
Children attend Newport News Public Schools
Newport News Public Schools serves the area. Students may start at Riverside Elementary, which gets a C from Niche, before going to Homer L. Hines Middle, which also receives a C. Warwick High gets a C-plus and offers a specialized health sciences program.

Commuters can take Jefferson Avenue to connect to Interstate 64, which runs north to Richmond and south to the rest of Hampton Roads. Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport is also just 5 miles north.
Community pool, hiking trails and hands-on exhibits
The Beaconsdale Pool on Ferguson Lane is open seasonally and sells memberships to anyone in the neighborhood. In the north end, Deer Park is a 50-acre green space with wooded trails, baseball diamonds and a playground. The Virginia Living Museum offers hands-on exhibits and over 250 plant and animal species. Mariners' Lake is nearby and offers fishing and boating.
