A cultural center of Newport News
The Chestnut neighborhood in Newport News, Virginia, is home to the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center, a hub for local music, theater, film, dance and art. Downing-Gross is the home of the Ella Fitzgerald Theater, a 276-seat venue named for the legendary “First Lady of Song,” and the Chestnut community gathers there to celebrate its history, heritage and culture. The venue is a popular spot for local weddings, and in 2023, the art center held a month-long party celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop in America. Chestnut has long been a vibrant cultural center in Newport News, a legacy that can be felt throughout the neighborhood to this day. "That region of Newport News is known as the Yard District," says Dana Robbins, Realtor and associate broker with RW Towne Realty. "There are tons of murals, concerts and art events, and the area has an artistic flair to it."
The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center features local art galleries and a theater.
