Grafton
Local shops and eateries in Yorktown
There’s a ton of shopping and dining available on Highway 17, from Kroger and Walgreens to familiar fast-food options like Dairy Queen and Dunkin’ Donuts, within minutes of home. But for retail and restaurants with more local flair, there’s Riverwalk Landing in downtown Yorktown. “It’s just a bunch of little local restaurants and family shops,” says Mutone of the walkable, waterfront district. At Gangsta Dog, pick up dog supplies, food and treats. Rent a bike or beach supplies at Patriot Tours & Provisions. There are also jewelers, goldsmiths, bookshops and art galleries lining the bustling brick sidewalks that overlook the York River. For food, try the baked goods at Carrot Tree Kitchens, authentic Japanese and Korean fare at Umi Sushi or an artisan pizza and surf and turf at Water Street Grille. “And in the summer, there’s entertainment,” says Mutone, referring to the seasonal concert series put on by the county. “On Thursday nights, there’s a band and food trucks. You can park easily, walk, enjoy the free concert, have dinner and then walk on the beach. It’s just really lovely,” she says.Highly rated York County schools
Local kids are served by schools in the Grafton zone of the York County School Division. Youngsters between preschool and fifth grade go to either Dare or Grafton Bethel Elementary, both of which earn A grades from Niche. Older students continue to Grafton Middle for sixth through eighth grade and Grafton High for ninth through 12th. Both the middle and high schools earn A grades from Niche, too. Teens at Grafton High can participate in the school’s dual enrollment program and earn an associate degree in Social Science or a General Education Certificate by taking classes at the Virginia Peninsula Community College.Hot housing market
Grafton homes run the gamut from modest 1940s-era Cape Cod cottages to large Traditional and Colonial Revival-style new builds. There are also Traditional-style townhomes and condos available in subdivisions like Grafton Woods. Prices range anywhere from $210,000 to more than $825,000, but the median hovers at around $365,000, which is slightly under the median for both York County and Yorktown. “The bottom line, in the market right now, is that any prospective buyer should absolutely have their financing in order before they even start looking,” says Mutone. “Homes are selling within a day or a week. If they’re priced correctly, they’re gone really fast. There’s not a lot for sale, so if you want to buy something, you should be prepared and have everything in order because there are a lot more people wanting to buy than there are places to buy.”Big municipal park and waterfronts
Newport News Park, one of the largest city-run parks in the country, sprawls over about 8,000 acres just west of Grafton and offers an archery range, disc golf course, ropes course and more than 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. There are also two freshwater reservoirs. Harwood’s Mill is closest to home, off Oriana Road at the park’s south end. Locals can fish for bass, pickerel and sunfish and launch private watercraft or rent boats and motors there. Yorktown Beach, on the York River, is just a few miles north of Grafton. And Buckroe Beach, on the Chesapeake Bay right before the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, is less than 17 miles south. The drive takes about 30 minutes, depending on traffic.Norfolk to Richmond and beyond
Highway 17 runs through nearly the center of Grafton. Via the main road, the 66-mile drive northwest to Richmond takes only about an hour. By taking 17 south to Interstate 64 or 664, the 37-mile drive south to Norfolk takes about 40 minutes, depending on tunnel traffic. As the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project is in progress, construction right outside the tunnel on I-64 can impact traffic conditions, especially during rush hour. The Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport is under 5 miles away, between 17 and I-64.
