Midcentury homes with occasional train noise
Green Oaks’ ranch-style homes and Cape Cods were built around the 1950s and 1960s, and the prices usually range from $200,000 to $350,000. Properties here have large yards that extend to streets without sidewalks. Most homes have attached garages, but a few have detached garages in the backyards. Residents on the west side of Green Oaks might hear Amtrak trains, as the train tracks run past the neighborhood's western boundary. The Brittingham-Midtown Community Center neighbors Horner L. Hines Middle School. The center hosts daily events, from walking groups to open gym hours, though some visitors head straight to swim classes in the Midtown Aquatics Center. The Mariners' Museum and Park is a popular destination near Green Oaks for its outdoor activities and museum. “The Mariners' Museum is renowned for its replica model of the Titanic,” Cox says. “There are walking trails, too. If you mention the Noland Trail, everyone knows what you’re talking about.” The park also features the Bumblebee Learning Garden and a play area for kids. Visitors get free admission to the park, and admission to the museum is $1. Deer Park is another busy greenspace, with its playground, athletic fields and the Virginia Living Museum. Over 245 species of animals live at the VLM, from otters to bald eagles. When summer comes around, residents can drive about 12 miles to Buckroe Beach or 40 miles south via Interstate 64 to relax at Virginia Beach.

Route 17 leads to shops and popular restaurants
Route 17 is lined with chain restaurants and shops, but there are also locally owned businesses like Gus's Hot Dog King. The restaurant has been open since the 1970s and has a simple yet popular menu of hotdogs, burgers and sandwiches. Sage Kitchen is a farm-to-table restaurant attached to Anderson’s garden center. The restaurant serves fresh salads, wraps and burgers that pair with its cocktail and fresh-pressed juice selections. The Walmart on Route 17 has groceries, and Game’s Farmers Market has been selling farm-fresh produce since 1972.
Short drives to Newport News schools
Kids are zoned for Sedgefield Elementary, which earns a C-minus from Niche. The school feeds into the Green Oaks' C-rated Homer L. Hines Middle. Warwick High is across the street from the neighborhood and receives a C-plus. Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is a private Catholic middle school nearby that receives an A-plus.
