Gateway to Newport News Park and the Virginia coast
Roughly fifty miles west of Virginia Beach by Interstate 64, Greenwood is one part municipal park, one part industrial and one part residential. Its compact residential areas may be a small part of the neighborhood, but its homes are quintessential suburbia and its restaurants are gems to uncover. “There are some phenomenal restaurants here that aren’t your traditional chains,” says Randy Chapman, a lifelong resident of Newport News and owner of Greenwood-based Seven Cities Carnival Rentals. “It’s a great location. Yorktown, Williamsburg, Jamestown, it’s all here.” Perhaps the most significant point of pride for residents is the area’s shipyard and military bases. “My grandad was a marine electrician at the shipyard, and my dad retired from the shipyard too,” Chapman says. “I’ve done events as far as Hollywood, California, and I’m proud to say this is my home.”
Greenwood is located roughly fifty miles west of Virginia Beach.
Newport News Park is over 7,500 acres.

Wide suburban streets and easy interstate access
Interstate 64 is the backbone of travel in Newport News, making a car essential for residents. Another high-traffic thoroughfare is Jefferson Ave, along which the Hampton Roads Transit bus system operates many stops. With I-64 as the highway connecting Newport News to Richmond, traffic can slow to a crawl on the interstate, especially near Williamsburg, where the number of lanes is reduced.
Jamaican jerk wings
With Newport News Park and industrial areas taking up much of Greenwood, shopping and dining options are mainly limited to the west and east ends of the neighborhood. On the east side, Mystic Jamaica is popular for its jerk wings and oxtail. The area holds several 7-Elevens and locally owned convenience stores, but residents can head to Food Lion on Warwick Boulevard for groceries.
Mystic Jamaica is a popular choice among residents, with Jamaican specialties like curries, fish stew & beef patties.

Year-round activities at Newport News Park
“Newport News Park butts right up to the Colonial Yorktown battlefields,” Chapman says. “So you could just keep walking forever.” Covering more than 7,500 acres, Newport News Park is the largest municipal park in the southeast United States. “The park has a lot of activities for people,” says Mary Kay, museum exhibit coordinator for Newport News Parks and Recreation. “There are ballparks, facilities for almost any sport you can think of, really. There are shelters and picnic areas, kayak and boat rentals and a lot of trails throughout the park.”
Locals can hit the range to warm up before playing a round at the Newport News Golf Club.
Nelson residents love to take in the views and run a long through the Nature Park.

Fall Festival, Celebration of Lights and more
The neighborhood’s biggest annual events are typically held at Newport News Park. “The best one is the Fall Festival,” Kay says. “It’s been going on more than forty years now, the first weekend in October.” Also held in the park, the Newport News Celebration of Lights is Virginia’s first drive-through holiday light exhibit and runs from November to January each year. In spring, there’s the Children’s Festival of Friends, where children can participate in more than 100 activities like crafts, pony rides, an obstacle course and more.

Local government has plans to address crime rates
Newport News property crimes reached 4,233 in 2022, making the property crime rate 2,297 per 100,000 residents that year. The U.S. property crime rate that year was 1,955 per 100,000 residents. Violent crimes in Newport News reached 1,121 in 2022, for a violent crime rate of 608 per 100,000 residents. The U.S. violent crime rate was 380 per 100,000 residents. Despite higher crime rates throughout Newport News, data show Greenwood is among Newport News neighborhoods with the fewest crimes. “The mayor just gave his state of the city talk and stated he would be creating a special committee to deal with the crime situation,” Kay says. “They’ll have a panel that will focus on trying to remedy this.”
