Secluded community near Fort Eustis
Surrounded by history and nature, Lee Hall is tucked in the far-most western end of Newport News, and its namesake is derived from “the Lee Hall Mansion and the Lee Hall Depot, both museums in the area,” says Buddy Lord, a Realtor at Abbitt Realty Company. The area is split into two pockets by Fort Eustis and appeals to those working on the military base. One end comprises residential areas, while the other features a public golf course, airfields and archery fields used by military workers. Aside from the sounds of the occasional military aircraft flying overhead, the residential streets are secluded from the activity of surrounding cities.
Wooded subdivisions and creekfront condos
Narrow, unmarked backroads have a cozy feel, with abundant trees filling the spaces around homes. Wooded subsections are peppered with ranch, split-level and new traditional homes with brick and gabled vinyl exteriors. Homes feature spacious, well-kept yards with small gardens. Common additions also include driveways and one- to two-car garages. Prices for a house needing modern renovations start at around $160,000. The highest price point for a single-family home in Lee Hall is $415,000. While townhouses and condo communities offer less upkeep, several back up to Skiffe’s Creek, providing waterfront views. These homes are priced between $149,000 and $375,000.
Magnet programs offered at Newport News Public Schools
Students in Lee Hall are zoned for Newport News Public Schools. They may begin their education at Katherine G. Johnson Elementary School, which offers a Dual Language Immersion Program to students with instruction in English and Spanish. They’ll later filter into Mary Passage Middle School, which gets a C from Niche. At B-plus-rated Woodside High School, students can enroll in an Arts and Communications magnet program, which includes concentrations in visual arts, drama and journalism.
Ample outdoor amenities at Newport News Park
One of the most sought-after parks in Newport News is within 3 miles of Lee Hall, sitting just on the other side of I-64. The 7,500-acre natural oasis of Newport News Park is “a great park to rent boats or go horseback riding, and there’s a 4-mile trail where you can run all the way to Yorktown,” Lord says. While traversing the shaded pathways by foot or bike, locals will likely spot wildlife like deer, foxes or beavers. People can also go freshwater fishing, take the kids to run around a playground or test their hand-eye coordination skills on an 18-hole disc golf course. The Pines Golf Course at Fort Eustis sits near the southern end of its namesake military base, offering another option to get outdoors along a 24-hole course filled with rolling fairways and tree-lined greens. Thrill seekers will enjoy living close to the rollercoasters at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, just 7 miles away. The area’s history is on full display at Lee Hall Depot, where locals can get a glimpse of the railroad industry’s impact. People can also pay for guided tours of Lee Hall Mansion, built in 1859, to learn more about its original owners and the grand Italianate-style home.
Easy access to big box stores and shopping malls
Though Lee Hall maintains a rural feel, it is highly connected to the amenities throughout Newport News because of its convenience to Interstate 64. Shopping hubs like Jefferson Commons and Patrick Henry Mall are within 10 miles. The former has more of a strip mall feel, where locals step outside to walk between stores like Old Navy and T.J. Maxx. There’s also a Trader Joe’s for grocery essentials. Patrick Henry Mall is an indoor complex with a host of big-box stores, including JCPenney and Macy’s. Nearby Port Warwick’s array of local eateries is ideal for a night out. Head to Schlesinger’s Steakhouse for an upscale atmosphere, or pick up a New York-style pizza from Brickhouse Tavern.
I-64 connects to downtown Newport News
Interstate 64 links locals to the surrounding area. Taking the freeway for 9 miles will lead to Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. Less than 12 miles from Lee Hall is the heart of Newport News, while driving an additional 21 miles south allows residents to reach downtown Norfolk. Locals can avoid the interstate to reach medical care. Instead, they take Jefferson Avenue for 6.5 miles to Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital. Hampton Roads Transit bus stops are dotted along Warwick Boulevard and Elmhurst Street for public transportation users.
