McIntosh residents live close to some of the city’s biggest amenities
In the northern section of Newport News, residential suburbs make up McIntosh. The neighborhood is named after George James McIntosh, who served as Newport News Public Schools’ superintendent from 1965 to 1975. Residents in north Newport News have quick access to some of the city’s biggest destinations and amenities. “This area is closer to a lot of hotspots like Fort Eustis, the Newport News airport and the interstate,” says Nichole Harrison, a Real Estate Agent with Prodigy Realty, who’s been selling homes in the area since 2019. With proximity to Interstate 64, as well as plenty of shopping and dining along Jefferson Avenue, McIntosh provides a complete suburban package for homebuyers.

Colonial-style homes starting in the $300,000s
McIntosh is a large residential area with subdivisions that offer homes from the mid-to-late-1900s like colonials, ranch-style homes and split-levels. Houses are perched on leafy lots averaging a quarter-acre, often featuring mature trees and tidy landscaping. Most properties have paved driveways with room for cars. Single-family homes typically sell for $300,000 to $500,000. “We’re still in a low inventory market here,” says Justin Wynings, a team leader and Realtor with RE/MAX Peninsula, who’s been selling homes here for over a decade. “We’re not seeing the same crazy appreciation we saw over the past few years when houses were going $30,000 to $50,000 over the asking price, but homes are still selling at or near list price. We’re still seeing multiple offers in a lot of situations, and it’s definitely still a seller’s market.”

The Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport is located less than 3 miles south.
Hiking, disc golf and campgrounds at Newport News Park
Just over 2 miles north, Newport News Park’s 8,000 acres makes it one of the largest municipal parks east of the Mississippi River. Locals can hike one of the nature trails, bike the 5-mile hard-packed gravel bike loop, play disc golf on the 18-hole course or fish in one of the reservoirs. Canoes and paddleboats are available to rent, and 188 campsites are available for overnight stays. There's also swings, slides and covered picnic pavilions at the Newport News Park Playground. Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run is a public 36-hole course just over a mile north. Despite being a coastal city, Huntington Beach, located 10 miles south along the James River, is the only sandy coast in Newport News. “If you go to Buckroe Beach in Hampton, that’s still just going to be on the Bay, but you’re going to at least get waves coming in,” Harrison says.
