Colonial-style homes starting in the $300,000s
McIntosh is a large residential area with subdivisions that offer homes from the mid-to-late-1900s like colonials, ranch-style homes and split-levels. Houses are perched on leafy lots averaging a quarter-acre, often featuring mature trees and tidy landscaping. Most properties have paved driveways with room for cars. Single-family homes typically sell for $300,000 to $500,000. “We’re still in a low inventory market here,” says Justin Wynings, a team leader and Realtor with RE/MAX Peninsula, who’s been selling homes here for over a decade. “We’re not seeing the same crazy appreciation we saw over the past few years when houses were going $30,000 to $50,000 over the asking price, but homes are still selling at or near list price. We’re still seeing multiple offers in a lot of situations, and it’s definitely still a seller’s market.”Hiking, disc golf and campgrounds at Newport News Park
Just over 2 miles north, Newport News Park’s 8,000 acres makes it one of the largest municipal parks east of the Mississippi River. Locals can hike one of the nature trails, bike the 5-mile hard-packed gravel bike loop, play disc golf on the 18-hole course or fish in one of the reservoirs. Canoes and paddleboats are available to rent, and 188 campsites are available for overnight stays. There's also swings, slides and covered picnic pavilions at the Newport News Park Playground. Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run is a public 36-hole course just over a mile north. Despite being a coastal city, Huntington Beach, located 10 miles south along the James River, is the only sandy coast in Newport News. “If you go to Buckroe Beach in Hampton, that’s still just going to be on the Bay, but you’re going to at least get waves coming in,” Harrison says.Arts and communications program at Woodside High
Students may start at George J. McIntosh Elementary, which gets a C from Niche, before going to Ella Fitzgerald Middle, which has a C-plus. Woodside High earns a B-plus and offers an arts and communications magnet program.Close to I-64, Bon Secours and Newport News International
With Interstate 64 running through McIntosh, residents have quick and convenient access to other areas of Newport News and the rest of Hampton Roads. Proximity to Fort Eustis makes for a quick and easy commute for those who work on the base. Bon Secours Mary Immaculate is the closest hospital, located just over a mile south. The Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport is located less than 3 miles south.Shopping and dining along Jefferson Avenue
Along Jefferson Avenue, Food Lion is closeby for groceries, and MP International is a local grocer and restaurant with Caribbean goods. Popular dining options include Cazadores Mexican Grill with authentic Mexican dishes, and Amadeus El Patio with Dominican favorites. For more shopping, residents can drive 2 miles south to Jefferson Commons, which features chains like Petco, Kohl’s and Lowe’s Home Improvement.
