Morrison is a residential neighborhood in central Newport News. While suburban roads are quiet, it’s a short drive to scenic outdoor spaces and the expansive City Center at Oyster Point, a mixed-use facility great for quick errands or weekend entertainment. Plus, the neighborhood is near major roadways that lead throughout the city and the state. “It’s so close to Interstate 64, making all of the Hampton Roads area accessible,” says Jessica Concepcion, an associate with Re/Max Peninsula and a 20-plus-year Newport News resident. “It’s near employment hubs like the shipyard and has affordable and market-rate housing.”

Outdoor spaces include lakes and beaches
Sandy Bottom Nature Park is just outside the neighborhood. Sandy Bottom Lake is the centerpiece of this roughly 450-acre outdoor space, and visitors can rent boats to cruise through the water or stand on a wooden platform to watch migratory birds fly overhead . A nature center that hosts educational programs overlooks the lake, and miles of walking trails weave through forests and wetland marshes. On the other side of the neighborhood, Mariners’ Lake Natural Area also has trails passing the water. This is a popular spot to kayak and fish. The adjacent Deer Park is a great spot for active recreation, featuring a playground and sports fields. Buckroe Beach, one of the area’s most popular, is about 12 miles east for a beach day.
Near Morrison, Sandy Bottom Nature Park features miles of dog-friendly hiking trails and walking paths for outdoor lovers.

To the south, Walmart Neighborhood Market and Game’s Farmers Market, a family-owned spot mostly selling locally grown or sourced produce and meat, give residents grocery shopping options. A sizeable commercial presence is north of the neighborhood, particularly around City Center at Oyster Point, a mixed-use complex. Here, folks can dine at restaurants like Hayashi Sushi & Grill, catch a movie at Cinemark, shop at retailers like Loft or browse specialty stores like Chef’s Market Food Hall, a market, brewery and entertainment center. The food hall sells everything from coffee to ice cream and has duckpin bowling and darts. For health care services, Riverside Regional Medical Center is less than 2 miles west.
