Accessible and affordable neighborhood near downtown Newport News

Bound by Interstate 664 to the north and Route 60 to the south, Newsome is a primarily residential neighborhood located just outside of downtown Newport News. “There’s so much accessibility in that area,” says Jessica Concepcion, an associate with Re/Max Peninsula who has lived in Newport News for over two decades. “Being so close to major roadways expands your network into all of Hampton Roads.” Plus, this small community offers more affordable home prices than surrounding areas, making it comparatively accessible to first-time homebuyers and tenured residents alike. “The rates are very affordable,” Concepcion says. “It’s a reasonable area to buy and invest in.”

Good for first-time homebuyers

In Newsome, modest homes sit on sidewalk-lined streets. The land is flat, above-ground powerlines cast shadows onto grassy front lawns and sporadic trees dot roadsides. “There’s so much potential in that area for a first-time homebuyer,” Concepcion says. Those looking to purchase a property in Newsome can find shotgun-style houses, Colonial Revivals or bungalows that may need repairs for about $145,000 to $200,000. Homes with updated interiors can cost $215,000 to $270,000, while recently built New Traditional homes run in the $395,000 to $470,000 range.

Getting around Newsome

The neighborhood is located near many of the Hampton Roads area’s major roadways. Interstate 664 borders Newsome to the north, eventually connecting to Interstate 64, which leads about 80 miles to Richmond and continues throughout the state. I-664 also leads across the water, over the Monitor Merrimac Bridge Tunnel, and into Suffolk. Route 60 runs along the southern part of the neighborhood and extends about 5 miles east to Hampton. A few bus stops on Roanoke Avenue allow locals to travel throughout the city using public transportation. And when it’s time to fly, the Norfolk International Airport is about 20 miles southeast.

Museums and shoreside parks

The Newsome House Museum and Cultural Center is a restored 1899 Queen Anne property that was once the home of J. Thomas Newsome, a prominent Black attorney, and his family. Today, visitors can learn about the social justice movements Newsome championed for the Black community, like voter registration and education.

It’s only 1 mile to the shore, and a paved walking path runs along Chesapeake Avenue. Along the way, locals sunbathe on the sandy shores of Anderson Park. The adjacent Monitor-Merrimac Overlook Park also has a small beach, as well as a long wooden fishing pier extending into the Newport News Channel. Nearby, King-Lincoln Park also has piers that reach through the waves. Visitors can compete on the park’s sports courts or listen to live music from the amphitheater during events like King-Lincoln Park Day.

Nearby shopping and dining

The neighborhood has modest convenience stores, like Quick Save Food Store on Chestnut Avenue and Big Apple Food Mart on Roanoke Avenue. A Piggly Wiggly on nearby Jefferson Avenue offers a spot for larger grocery trips. Across the street, Pearlie’s Restaurant has an extensive menu of soups, salads and sandwiches, all served in a cozy atmosphere. Within Newsome, Park’s Inn Restaurant is popular for a casual dinner or a quick drink.

Students zoned for Newport News City Public Schools

Newport News City Public Schools serves Newsome. Students can attend L.F. Palmer Elementary School, which gets a C grade from Niche, before Huntington Middle, which receives a C-minus. Students can finish their public education at Heritage High School, which earns a C-plus and offers the Governor’s STEM Academy, a program preparing students for careers in science, technology, engineering and math through research opportunities and rigorous coursework.

Crime in Newsome

The neighborhood receives a 5 out of 10 on the CAP Index. While this is only slightly higher than the national average of 4 out of 10, potential homebuyers should be advised that the neighborhood receives a 9 out of 10 for homicide and a 7 out of 10 for both assault with a weapon and robbery.
