Blending leisure living, scientific discovery and major amenities, Palmer is considered to be within the heart of Newport News, Virginia. Patrick Henry Mall and the retail surrounding it provide residents with dozens of shopping and dining options on the north side of the neighborhood. There are a few residential options stretched across the neighborhood, such as the Village Green Community, Chesapeake Village Community Mobile Homes and the Warwick Mobile Home Community. The south side of the neighborhood is dominated by official buildings and residences that support the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, which houses its famous particle accelerator. Village Green family homes and two mobile home parks
In Village Green, residents have access to a community clubhouse and pool. “Village Green is in a great location. It’s near Patrick Henry Mall, the schools and the military bases,” says Cathie Harney, a Realtor with Peninsula Realty. Founded in 1975, the community is made up of over 300 houses. Residents can become Village Green Community Association (VGCA) members by paying annual fees, starting at $75 per year. Village Green dwellings vary in size and style, with brick ranch houses and two-story Colonial-inspired homes being found here. Most have three to four bedrooms and cost between $280,000 and $380,000. Manufactured homes in the Warwick Mobile Home Community with two to three bedrooms often cost between $60,000 and $80,000. Remodeled manufactured homes in the Chesapeake Village Community can cost around $100,000.
Ranch brick homes are plentiful within the Palmer community.

Public and private Newport City schools
Students in Palmer may attend schools within the Newport News City Public School District. They may start at L.F. Palmer Elementary School, which receives a C on Niche and has a weekly therapy dog program. Homer L. Hines Middle School teaches grades six through eight and receives a C grade. Warwick High School earns a C-plus and is ranked by Niche as in the top 20 most diverse public high schools in the area. Hampton Roads Academy has been rated one of the best private schools on the peninsula and teaches preschool through grade 12. It scores an A-plus rating and offers college prep and visual arts programs.
Palmer Elementary School serves Palmer residents of grades K-5.
Warwick High School serves Palmer residents of grades 9-12.

Golf, swim and attend performances around Palmer
With the James River so close, there are several parks along the water’s edge. Riverview Farm Park includes the Fantasy Farm Playground, a skatepark and soccer fields. Nearby is the Riverview Gymnastics Center, right next to Fido Field Dog Park and the James River Wastewater Treatment Plant. Chatham Trail near Lowe’s is a small pond with a walking path surrounding it, and it is dog friendly. Northeast of town, Kiln Creek Park has a playground and ball diamonds, as well as two basketball courts and a soccer field. James River Country Club includes an expansive green golf course, and the Ferguson Center for the Arts near Christopher Newport University hosts dance, theater, and musical performances.

Patrick Henry Mall and familiar shopping and dining
On the north side of the neighborhood, there are dozens of shopping and dining opportunities. “Patrick Henry Mall is right next door, and there are so many places to eat. Cheddar’s, Outback Steakhouse, you name it, they got it,” Harney says. Cheddar’s serves classic American comfort food with a Texas twist. Nori Nori Ramen, down the street on Oyster Point Road, has milk tea, onigiri, salmon and a variety of ramen. Big box stores like Target, Costco and Best Buy are nearby, and Aldi and Lidl are just down Jefferson Avenue.
As the most popular mall on the peninsula, Patrick Henry has many food options for shoppers.

Quick commutes around Palmer
Residents in the armed forces can find great proximity to Fort Eustis, Langley Airforce Base, and NASA Research Center, about 10 miles away. They, and everyone else, can get wherever they need to go via I-64. Palmer is also only 14 miles south via Interstate 64 to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport is just outside of the neighborhood, so accessing the airport is within a 3-mile drive.
Residents have many bus stops to choose from at the Patrick Henry Mall.
Getting away is extremely easy as the international airport is just a few miles away.

Annual events at the Virginia Living Museum
The Virginia Living Museum, which features live animals, aquariums, as well as animatronic dinosaurs, hosts an annual Bacchus Wine & Food Festival. Guests can enjoy fine wine and catered food and participate in a silent auction alongside live music and entertainment. The Hilton Village Farmer’s Market, 6 miles south of Palmer, is open every Saturday year-round in Historic Hilton Village.
