Secluded suburb with shopping, education and recreation

Set along the calm waters of the James River and settled among the woodlands is the Riverside suburb of Newport News. This secluded retreat is primarily residential, with everything necessary for daily life, including quick access to shopping, recreation and medical services. Its biggest draws are its natural beauty and diverse mix of amenities, from the Mariner’s Museum and Christopher Newport University to Noland Trail and the James River. “The river is wide enough that the sun rests perfectly on the water; it’s the type of view people leave the country for," says John Scott, president of The Riverside Community Civic Association.

Noland Trail, James River Country Club

The Mariner’s Museum is one of the largest maritime museums in the world, home to a collection of over 32,000 artifacts. Visitors can marvel at the life-sized reproduction of the USS Monitor or explore the International Small Craft Center. The museum also holds Noland Trail, a 5-mile footpath that winds through woodlands and around Mariner’s Lake. “We have multiple openings throughout the neighborhood with easy access to the trail,” adds Scott. The Virginia Living Museum is 2 miles north with 250 different species, a planetarium and a three-quarter-mile boardwalk trail. Riverside Beach is a private sliver of sandy coast along the James, only open to Riverside residents. Locals can also visit the nearby James River Country Club, a private, members-only club founded in 1932, for golf, tennis, swimming or dinner at the Huntington Lounge.
