Here, walking trails wind across wetland marshes, through forests and beside Sandy Bottom Lake, where migrating birds fly over the water and rented boats coast through. A nature center with outdoor gardens overlooks the lake, and visitors can learn about the environment through guided walking tours and other programs. For a beach day, Buckroe Beach, one of the area’s most popular, is about 12 miles east.

City Center at Oyster Point is just north of the neighborhood. This mixed-use facility has restaurants like Hayashi Sushi & Grill and Kitchen 740 Restaurant & Bar, an upscale American eatery with a seasonal menu. City Center’s Chef’s Market Food Hall is a market, brewery and entertainment space that sells everything from ice cream to coffee and hosts duckpin bowling, darts games and open mic nights. Visitors can also shop at spots like LOFT and Kitchen & Bath Shop, catch a movie at Cinemark or attend a wine tasting at Tinto. To the south of Robinson Terrance, locals can go grocery shopping at Walmart Neighborhood Market or Game’s Farmers Market, a family-owned grocery store mainly selling locally grown or sourced produce, meat, and more.

Getting around Robinson Terrace
“Because of all the nearby roadways, almost all of Hampton Roads is accessible,” Concepcion says. Interstate 64 runs along the top of the neighborhood, leading about 70 miles to Richmond and continuing throughout the state. The Hampton Roads Parkway and U.S. Route 17 also border the neighborhood, allowing locals to travel throughout Newport News. Bus stops on Route 17 give locals access to the city via public transit. For air travel, the Norfolk International Airport is about 25 miles southeast.
Newport News City Public Schools and nearby private options
Newport News City Public Schools serve Robinson Terrace. Students can attend Joseph H. Saunders Elementary School and Homer L. Hines Middle School, both of which receive C grades from Niche. They can finish their public education at Warwick High, which receives a C-plus and offers an International Baccalaureate program. Peninsula Catholic High School, which serves eighth to 12th graders, is in the neighborhood. Niche grades the school an A and ranks it as the No. 3 Best Catholic High School in the Norfolk area.
Warwick High School is one of the largest schools in the Robinson Terrace area.
Peninsula Catholic High School is a private, college preparatory school in Newport News serving students in grades 9 through 12.
