Salters Creek is a waterfront community near two interstates
Located along the James River in southern Newport News, Salters Creek — also known as Wilson — is a waterfront community close to major interstates. “It’s an established neighborhood, but it’s growing. They’re building new homes, and everyone is excited about that,” says Anita L. Cox, broker and owner of NextHome Coastal Luxury Realty who’s sold homes in the area for over 17 years. “A lot of people really enjoy its proximity to the James River. We’re a coastal town, and how much closer can you be to the waterfront?” Chesapeake Avenue runs along the river, and homes here have waterfront views. Interstates 64 and 664 are nearby, providing convenient access to the rest of the Hampton Roads area.
Near interstates, bus stops and medical care
U.S. Route 60, also called Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, is the neighborhood’s main road. Interstates 64 and 664 are nearby, leading about 12 miles to Newport News’ city center and providing access to the rest of Hampton Roads. Hampton Roads Transit’s buses stop throughout the community, and sidewalks make the area pedestrian friendly. Busy Sunday services at Ivy Baptist Church can create traffic and parking issues in the neighborhood, and the church has volunteers and police officers to help with traffic flow. Sentara CarePlex Hospital is 6 miles away, and Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport has domestic flights 14 miles away.
Early 20th-century architectural styles, some with river views
The neighborhood’s 20th-century American Foursquare, National and minimal traditional homes sit near the James River, and the homes on Chesapeake Avenue have unobstructed views of the water. The sidewalk-lined streets form a grid, where the homes sit close together and have grassy lawns large enough for an ornamental tree. Many houses have a paved single-car driveway, and the wide streets allow room for street parking. Prices typically range from around $100,000 to $300,000. Early 20th-century waterfront homes can cost between $350,000 and $400,000, and new construction homes can go for between $385,000 and $515,000. About half of the homes here are rentals.

A high flood risk, especially from hurricanes
Most of the neighborhood is in a Special Flood Hazard Area, a FEMA-designated zone of high flood risk. Most of the flooding comes from the creek, which can overflow its banks during high tides and heavy rainstorms. Hurricanes can bring a dangerous storm surge; the neighborhood is in Evacuation Zone A, meaning that it’s the first to evacuate during a hurricane. The Newport News Flood Assistance Program can help residents improve their homes to reduce risk, and the city has even bought homes here to revert the land to marsh.
