Tuckers Creek is a Newport News neighborhood on the rise
Just across the Monitor Merrimac Bridge Tunnel, Tuckers Creek is a growing southeastern Newport News neighborhood. New mixed-use facilities are popping up along Jefferson Avenue, and investors continue to renovate houses throughout the neighborhood. “I believe the updates not only improve quality of life but make the area more attractive to potential buyers and renters,” says Jessica Concepcion, an associate with Re/Max Peninsula who's lived in Newport News for more than 20 years. Plus, the neighborhood is located near Interstate 664, giving residents access to everything in Hampton Roads.
Modest homes are renovated or ready for investors
Homes in Tuckers Creek sit on modest lots with small front lawns and backyards. Sidewalks and above-ground powerlines line roadsides, and a few trees shade properties. “There is so much opportunity in that neighborhood, especially for a first-time home buyer,” Concepcion says. “The rates are really affordable.” Some homes are investments, while others hit the market renovated. Houses needing some work go for roughly $50,000 to $160,000, while homes with modern interiors or new construction can cost about $180,000 to $380,000, depending on the size, age and condition. The neighborhood also has many apartment complexes, accommodating the nearly three-fourths of residents who rent.
Recent revitalization along Jefferson Avenue
Newport News is changing, and this is evident on Jefferson Avenue. “When you drive down Jefferson, you see it has been modernized but maintains a historical element,” Concepcion says. “It gives you hope for what the city can become.” A new mixed-use development on the corner of Jefferson and 16th Street has top-floor apartments and space for ground-level businesses. Additionally, Newport News is working to add an improved walking trail, an early childhood center and a market with a food hall to this area. For now, residents can grocery shop at the Piggly Wiggly just north of Tuckers Creek or dine out at spots like Pearlie’s Restaurant, a casual eatery serving soups, salads and sandwiches.
Nearby waterfront parks
King-Lincoln Park is just south of the neighborhood. Here, visitors can compete on the tennis or basketball courts, cast their lines from the 1,600-foot-long fishing pier, take their kids to the playground or relax on the sandy shores of the James River. Musicians play in the park’s amphitheater for events like King-Lincoln Park Day during the summer. Nearby, Anderson Park and the adjacent Merrimac Overlook Park offer public beach access, and a paved path along Chesapeake Avenue allows locals to stroll by the water.
Students attend Newport News Public Schools
Newport News City Public Schools serve Tuckers Creek. Students can attend Riverside Elementary School, which gets a C from Niche, before Huntington Middle, which receives a C-minus. Students can finish their public education at Warwick High, which gets a C-plus and offers an International Baccalaureate program.
Getting around Tuckers Creek
Tuckers Creek is located near many major city roadways. Interstate 664 runs along the neighborhood’s western border, leading across the Newport News Channel to Suffolk. I-664 also connects to Interstate 64, which leads about 80 miles to Richmond and continues throughout the state. A few bus stops in the neighborhood allow residents to travel throughout the city on public transit. For air travel, the Norfolk International Airport is about 25 miles away.
Higher-than-average crime rates
The neighborhood receives an 8 out of 10 on the CAP Index, with particularly high violent crime scores. The national average is a 4 out of 10. Newport News conducted a crime assessment for the city in 2022 and has instituted a grant program to provide community organizations with money to help combat violence.
