Named for the iron oxide-colored rocks abundantly scattered along its shores, Agate Beach exemplifies the natural beauty of the Oregon coastline. This beach community sits at the northernmost point of Newport and includes the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. From this Central Coast neighborhood, residents have access to many beaches and parks, shops and restaurants and homes with ocean views.
After descending the forested beach access trail to the rocky shores of Agate Beach State Recreation Site, residents can fish, bird watch and look for razor clams. Yaquina Head brings in lots of surfers thanks to its strong waves from the point break. "In the summertime, the wind blows from the north, and it makes a really nice place to hang out that's not too windy," says Heidi Rogers, an Oregon Coast native and principal broker with Sotheby's International Realty. Quarry Cove also brings in lots of visitors for its scenic walks, mobility-friendly mats and status as a historical landmark. Residents can hike the Lucky Gap Trail, and pups can run free in a large, fenced area at the Agate Beach Neighborhood and Dog Park at the northern end of the community. To the south, across the Oregon Coast Highway, Agate Beach Golf Course features nine holes and a slightly rolling terrain. The course has been a local staple since 1931.
Several restaurants and shops line the highway, also known as U.S. Route 101. The Hill Buffet & Grill includes an all-you-can-eat buffet and a salad bar, and Szabo’s Steakhouse and Seafood is a laidback sports bar with trivia nights and happy hour. Sharks Seafood Bar and Steamer Co. offers an extensive seafood selection in a nautical-themed interior. Residents can get coffee and pastries in the drive-through at the family owned Bonnie’s Espresso kiosk. Also in the neighborhood are Roby’s Furniture and Appliance and Ossies Surf Shop, which offers lessons and board rentals. Walmart Supercenter, Safeway and Mini Pet Mart are all south of the neighborhood.
Manufactured homes, condos and ranch-style homes are prevalent in Agate Beach, which has some gravel roads and no sidewalks. Sarah Johnson is a principal broker with Taylor & Taylor Realty Co. and has sold several homes in Agate Beach. "The houses are more concentrated on the west side of 101 to the ocean, and they're mainly two stories to take in as many ocean views as possible. There are a lot of townhomes and condos too," she says. "The houses are coveted as being close to the beach and a bit outside of the hustle-bustle of downtown Newport." Prices range between $300,000 to $725,000 for single-family homes with two bedrooms apiece. Large retreat-like properties with eight bedrooms can cost up to $2 million. Condos and townhomes typically cost between $200,000 and $500,000, but luxury oceanfront units can range from $600,000 to $1 million. On average, homes sell within 19 days, compared to the U.S. average of 44 days.
The Yaquina Head Interpretation Center has interactive exhibits to help visitors learn more about the Yaquina lighthouse and local marine environment. Meanwhile, the Newport Cinema screens the latest movies, and discounted tickets are available every Tuesday.
Students can attend Yaquina View Elementary School for kindergarten through second grade and Sam Case Elementary School for grades three through five. Yaquina View has a B-plus rating on Niche, while Sam Case has a B-minus. Newport Middle School also earned a B-minus. B-rated Newport High School offers courses in global studies and constitutional law.
Highway 101 is the main thruway in the neighborhood, connecting drivers around Agate Beach and beyond to downtown Newport. Newport City Loop buses regularly travel through as well, making stops at NE 52nd Street and Pacific Shores RV Park. Agate Beach is a 10-mile drive from Depoe Bay, 13 miles from Lincoln Beach and 80 miles to Salem, Oregon’s state capital. The nearest hospital to the neighborhood is Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, less than 4 miles away.
