Bayfront
The Newport Historic Bayfront District
Thanks to the cluster of shops and restaurants dotting the Newport Historic Bayfront district, there are plenty of options to get a drink or find a hearty meal. Clearwater Restaurant’s blend of contemporary minimalism and nautical touches create a cozy dining space. For 75 years, family-owned restaurant Mo’s Seafood & Chowder has been featured in an episode of “America’s Best Restaurants.” Diners can also try authentic Thai cuisine at Lucky Thai Elephant or find out why The Barge Inn Tavern has proudly been home to “winos, dingbats and riff raff since 1935.” From the elevated deck of The Coffee House, patrons can see fishermen unloading their catches or even spot some of the locally famous sea lions. Shoppers can head to McKay’s Market or browse specialty shops. They can look for gifts at Kindred Hearts at Canyon Way or sweets at Newport Candy Shoppe.Thousand-mile-long routes from Newport
Bayfront is near two significantly extensive highways: U.S. Highway 101 (Oregon Coast Highway) and U.S. Route 20 (Corvallis-Newport Highway). Highway 101 extends from near Olympia, Washington to Los Angeles, California. Route 20 begins in Newport and ends in Boston, Massachusetts, spanning over 3,000 miles.Museums, science programs and fireworks
The Pacific Maritime Heritage Center has interactive exhibits and educational programs that delve into mariner culture. For quirky experiences, there are the kitschy oddities of Ripley’s Believe it or Not World of Adventure and The Wax Works. Residents can also look forward to every Fourth of July, when fireworks are set off over the Yaquina Bay.Yaquina Bay Bridge Trail
The public piers of the Newport Historic Bayfront provide some exquisite views of the Yaquina Bay. On the northern end of the bay is Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site, which offers places to swim, fish or see the historic Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, the only existing one in the state to have living quarters attached. The Yaquina Bay Bridge Trail is great for long expeditions. Beginning at the Bay Boulevard Trailhead and ending at the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, this 2.6-mile trail is great for hiking or biking.Diverse home designs
Homes in Bayfront are very diverse. "You’ve got everything from tiny little cottages that have been there since the 1900s to really fancy, modern homes,” says Audra Powell, a Principal Broker/ CRS for Advantage Real Estate who has sold numerous homes around the Newport region. Condos, Craftsmans and ranch-styles are among the most popular styles. Condos typically sell for $235,000 to $500,000 while single-family homes run for about $400,000 to $725,000 each. According to Powell, the housing market for Bayport is in great shape. “It’s one of the hottest housing markets on the coast. You’ve got a little more going in Newport than in the smaller areas, so houses tend to sell quickly, and the average sale price is 95-97% of list price,” she says.Lincoln County School District
Students may attend schools in the Lincoln County School District. Niche gave B-grades to both Yaquina View Elementary School and Newport Middle School. Newport High School was given a B-plus and offers unique courses like World History Through Film and Native American Studies.
