A bustling neighborhood by the beach and plenty of retail
Situated right next to the Pacific Ocean, Nye Beach is a Newport neighborhood that's both a beach community and an active commercial district. After John Nye claimed one acre of the land in 1866, the end of the nineteenth century saw an influx of residents flocking to its shores each summer. Since then, Nye Beach has grown into a bustling district. Today, it remains active thanks to its many local merchants. “It’s popular because it has a lot of trendy shops and restaurants, funky little coffee shops and live music,” says Heidi Rogers, a Principal Broker for Sotheby’s International Realty with a multi-home selling record in the Newport region.
Nye Beach's historic shopping district
Nye Beach owes much to its unique district of shops and restaurants, many of which have been around for decades. The Chowder Bowl has been dishing out chowder and seafood platters to the Newport community since 1980. Next door to The Chowder Bowl is Taphouse at Nye Creek, a family-friendly spot that offers burgers, pizza and cocktails. For more international palates, Sorella serves hand-crafted Italian dishes, while Zurita in Nye Beach delivers Spanish and Mediterranean flavors. There are also several boutique shops, including Tú Tú Tú Kitchen Cottage for kitchenware and Charisma Gifts for cards and knickknacks. For grocery shopping, McKay’s Market and Grocery Outlet are the places to go.
Downtown Nye Beach offers great shopping options.

Nye Beach's housing styles
Residential areas are populated by many homes left over from the neighborhood’s early days. Many of them even have ocean views or are within walking distance of shopping and dining “Some of the oldest homes in town were there from the days when pretty much nothing was going on there except fishing,” Rogers says. Condos, Craftsmans and beach cottages are all popular. “There’s the charming older cottage look with gables and dormers, design elements like that. Some of the older cottages are being restored to keep their vintage charm and the city has rules in place that any new or refinished buildings have to keep certain elements of Nye Beach style,” Rogers says. Home prices fluctuate between $300,000 on the lower end and $800,000 on the higher end.
