State parks and recreation sites along South Beach’s sandy coast
The sandy beaches at South Beach State Park are popular for fishing, crabbing, surfing and beachcombing. Paved bike and walking trails cut through the park’s mossy forest, while its equestrian trail begins near the South Jetty. The green space also offers a playground, an 18-hole disc golf course and horseshoe pits for more organized play. Across the highway, Wilder Twin Park has a play area for dogs and another disc golf course with baskets tucked away in a densely forested landscape. The Yaquina Estuary Trail hugs the shoreline of South Beach for almost a mile. Wooden bridges traverse swampy areas, and mudflats that emerge during low tide reveal plenty of clams. Grassy bluffs make way for sandy beaches popular among whale watchers at Lost Creek State Park. The scenic Oregon Coast Highway and several public transit services
The Oregon Coast Highway, also known as U.S. Route 101, leads north past Newport and Lincoln Beach to Astoria. It eventually crosses the Washington-Oregon border. Several public buses also serve the area. The Newport Loop reaches as far north as Agate Beach, while the South County service extends as far south as Yachats. The Coast to Valley Express Route picks passengers up near the Hatfield Marine Science Center in South Beach, bringing them to Albany, Oregon. The closest airport is about 83 miles away in Eugene.Contemporary Craftsman homes in Southshore and older builds with acreage
Contemporary Craftsman homes — largely built between the late 1990s and the early 2000s — in the Southshore subdivision are scattered along the shoreline and fetch between $630,000 and $850,000. Monthly homeowners association (HOA) fees around $285 maintain the gated community and grant residents access to its regulation tennis courts, pickleball courts, heated indoor pool and private beach access.Homes dating back to the 1960s and 1970s in the south of the neighborhood range from $430,000 to $750,000. "The majority of lots in the Newport city limits are city-sized. As you get a few miles south, it’s easier to find an acre or a half-acre lot,” Saxton says. “I have an acre, and I have a big shop and room for the pets and kids to run around.” Homeowners outside of city limits may be responsible for their own septic systems and propane services. New traditional homes from the 2010s and townhouses with two to three bedrooms go from $415,000 to $500,000. Monthly HOA fees for townhouses stay under $100.
The CAP Index Crime Score in South Beach is 2 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.

The dining scene in South Beach largely revolves around seafood. The South Beach Fish Market serves clam chowder, crispy fish and chips, fish sandwiches and cooked Dungeness crab on colorful picnic tables. Take-home delicacies include hickory-smoked oysters and salmon candy, as well as freshly caught chinook salmon, Alaskan halibut and whole Dungeness crab. South Beach Grocery is next door for the essentials. The Rogue Spirits Sunset Bar serves Oregon-brewed beer and spirits, offering views of the Yaquina Bay Marina and the bridge to Newport. The bar is next to Rogue’s global headquarters and distillery, a major employer in the area.
