Northwestern Chicago suburb community with convenient travel options

Situated at the center of the village of Niles, Grennan Heights balances the convenience of a central location with the stylings of suburban life. Connected to the northwestern reaches of Chicago while offering its own easygoing pace, this community is popular with young families, those hoping to downsize and anyone who’s interested in an alternative to the bustle of a more central life. “It’s really the heart of Niles. We call it one of those buy-and-die communities – once people come here, they stay,” says Phil Mistrata, a licensed real estate broker with Dream Town Real Estate. Mistrata has sold homes in the northwest side of Chicagoland since 1997.

Eclectic 20th Century homes in Niles

Most of Grennan Heights’ homes were established from the 1940s to the 1970s, aside from a select few built in the 2000s. Properties exhibit different styles, including Georgian homes, Cape Cods, modest ranchers and rare custom homes, but shared elements include a focus on brick exteriors and asphalt roofs. Most homes have basements and detached garages; homes with attached garages are present but rare. Most two-bedroom homes range from about $290,000 to $415,000. Three- and four-bedroom homes are generally available from $390,000 to $701,000, with a few high-end options reaching up to $855,000.

Volleyball for girls at Grennan Heights Park

Sitting between blocks of homes and rows of trees, Grennan Heights Park has tennis and pickleball courts, a playground and a fieldhouse with an indoor gym. The park is one of two practice locations for Mindset Volleyball Club, a youth volleyball program for middle and high school girls. To the neighborhood’s east, Miami Woods offers lengthy trails that connect to a rich network of parks. “It can take you all the way to the Chicago Botanic Garden,” Mistrata says.

To the northwest, Oak Park frequently hosts live concerts from local bands in the summertime. Locals can find a basketball court and a baseball field on the grounds. The park’s butterfly garden blooms with 13 different wildflower species during the warmer seasons, including golden alexanders in the early spring and sky blue aster in late summer. For locals on the south end of the neighborhood, Triangle Park is another small park with a playground area a few blocks away.

Classic diner fare, Polish sausage and bakery fare

Locals can pick up prescriptions from the Walgreens near Milwaukee Avenue and Oakton Street, on the southwest corner of the neighborhood. For general grocery shopping and everyday items, Jewel-Osco and Jerry’s Fruit & Garden are also nearby. Baklava, falafel and ketchup chips are some of the international items on the shelves at George’s Grocery and Tobacco, a market specializing in Middle Eastern foods.

Steak sandwiches, ribs and burgers are staples on the menu at Booby’s, a counter-serve joint that first opened in Niles in 1961. “It’s got a funny name, but it’s exceptional diner food,” Mistrata says. China Star Restaurant is a take-out mainstay, offering familiar combination platters alongside rolled ice cream desserts. Lalich Deli prepares Cevapi sausage and other Eastern European eats in-house, while Oak Mill Bakery offers everyday pastries and sweets for special occasions a few doors down.
