Homes, amenities make suburban Lawrencewood Gardens appealing

Lawrencewood Gardens is an appealing destination in Niles, a suburban community that borders Chicago’s far northwest side. Homeowners enjoy tranquil neighborhood living as well as easy access to modern conveniences. “It’s a nice, central location near good schools and major roads and interstates,” says Mark Ahmad of Century 21 Circle, who specializes in suburban home sales. Civic Center Plaza anchors the Waukegan Road commercial corridor, which runs through Lawrencewood Gardens. “When you have all those amenities, it increases the desirability of living there, because you don’t have to drive much,” Ahmad adds. The neighborhood is home to a highly-rated K-8 school and is part of an A-plus high school district.

Cape Cods are prominent among an attractive collection of homes

Sturdy yet attractive brick-built midcentury homes line walkable streets shaded by mature trees. Well-kept lawns and custom landscaping add curb appeal. Charming Cope Cods with dormers and post-war cottage-style homes stand out among the single-family housing options. Separating the homes are side drives that lead to backyard garages. Other architectural styles range from Tudor to ranch. Contemporary options are typically larger homes with attached garages. Townhomes and condominiums offer a multi-family alternative. They are concentrated on the neighborhood’s east side away from the traditional residential areas. Prices range from around $250,000 to nearly $600,000, although Ahmad says most homes sell for $400,000-plus and up. “The market is very strong, I can tell you that,” he says.

Waukegan Road is a convenient commercial corridor in the neighborhood

Home Depot and Super H Mart, an Asian grocery store, anchor several shopping and dining options along Waukegan Road in the heart of the neighborhood. The Niles-Main District Library, a post office and a bank are all conveniently located nearby. A variety of additional shopping and dining options can be found nearby. Pequod’s Pizza, one of the top restaurants that serves up the iconic Chicago deep dish style, is about 2 miles away in neighboring Morton Grove.

Culver Elementary is rated A-minus, nearby high school A-plus

Students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade do not have to leave the neighborhood to attend school. Clarence E. Culver Elementary, the lone institution in Niles School District 71, is rated A-minus by Niche. Graduates typically attend nearby Niles West High School, which earns an A-plus from Niche. Merrick Garland, former U.S. Attorney General, is a graduate. Niles West and Niles North make up the Niles Township High Schools District 219, which is also rated A-plus. Under Illinois law, students can apply to attend schools outside of their geographic zones under a permissive transfer process. Safety concerns and specialized education programs are among the criteria for eligibility. For out-of-district applications, the original and receiving districts must approve any transfers.

Tam O’ Shanter Golf Course has a surprising history

Kirk Lane Park is a community green space that offers pickleball courts, a basketball court and a playground. Adjacent to the neighborhood is a trail that winds through forest preserves, and next to that is the historic Tam O’ Shanter Golf Course, an award-winning 9-hole layout located along the north branch of the Chicago River. In 1953, the course was the site of the World Championship of Golf, the first nationally televised tournament.

Easy access to the area by bus, train and car

Residents can catch the bus for travel to nearby points of interest. Resurrection Medical Center and Advocate Lutheran General hospitals are both about 3 miles away. Bus stops are conveniently located along Harlem Avenue and Oakton Street that border the neighborhood. Harlem Avenue leads directly into the Chicago city limits. Multiple commuter train stations are just minutes from the neighborhood. Residents can take Oakton west to get to O’Hare Airport. “You’re no more than 25 minutes away,” Ahmad says.
