McKinley Heights combines convenience with a low-key atmosphere
On the east side of Niles, McKinley Heights is a small community of approximately 1,000 residents. Conveniently located between nearby major job markets, McKinley stands out as a more affordable and low-key option for commuters. “It’s a much quieter area than Warren,” says Marcus Agee, a Realtor with Keller Williams Chervenic Realty. A variety of housing styles and nearby shopping also draw potential homeowners.
Older west-side homes contrast with newer east-side builds
Houses on the west side of McKinley Heights are some of the area's oldest, with early-20th-century Cape Cods and midcentury ranch-style homes dominating. These options range from about $90,000 to $220,000, depending on size and condition. New Traditional and other contemporary developments are generally further east, selling for between $370,000 and $470,000. Lots are typically about a quarter of an acre, featuring grassy lawns and mature trees. The median price for a single-family home is around $40,000, which is less than half the median price in nearby communities like McDonald, Girard and Hilltop.
Students progress from Niles Primary to McKinley High School
Students can start at Niles Primary School for kindergarten through second grade before heading to Niles Intermediate School for third through fifth grade. Niche rates these schools with a B and B-minus, respectively. Niles Middle School has a grade of C-plus, while McKinley High School has a grade of B-minus. Open enrollment allows students to transfer to schools outside of their district. The ETI Technical College of Niles is within the community and offers associate degrees in business and nursing.
Basic shopping is nearby with major retail just 3 miles away
Nearby Interstate 422 is dotted with basic shopping options that include hardware, music and secondhand clothing. About 3 miles away, the Eastwood Mall Complex is home to over 200 restaurants, retailers and other stores, including Target, Applebee’s and Macy’s. Agee says that most surrounding cities and towns come here to shop. "It's in the middle of everything, so it makes sense," he says. Scenna’s Family Restaurant has a homey atmosphere with a menu of classic diner options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Iron Mann Grille serves tavern food favorites like wings, cheese curds and onion petals.
Outdoor recreation ranges from wooded trails to 18-hole golf
Stevens Park offers standard public amenities, including playground equipment, athletic courts and a wooded walking trail, but sets itself apart with a disc golf course. David Tod Park is best known for its baseball fields, heavily used by the Girard Baseball Association, a popular youth league. In nearby Vienna, the Avalon Country Club at Squaw Creek offers a private 18-hole experience on one of the oldest championship courses in the Midwest. Niles hosts annual holiday celebrations, including parades on Halloween and the Fourth of July, as well as a Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony.
Interstate 422 connects residents to Warren and Youngstown
Interstate 422 passes through the center of McKinley Heights, providing straightforward access to Warren and Youngstown, both approximately 7 miles away. Mercy Health – St. Joseph Warren Hospital is equipped to provide emergency services and general medical care.
