Lower living costs in Barraud Park
Bordering the Lafayette River and less than 20 miles away from the Virginia Beach oceanfront, Norfolk's Barraud Park is a place a sea lover can appreciate. Named after a Norfolk family that settled in the area during Colonial times, Barraud Park's low cost of living and proximity to the coast is a rare combination, making the neighborhood worth considering for home buyers. "It's definitely affordable," says local Realtor Cliff Wells of Century 21 Nachman Realty. "I think you can find a pretty nice house there if you're looking in a lower price range."
Fast-moving housing market
Homes along Barraud Park's grid-style streets can range from $150,000 for a ranch dwelling to upwards of $400,000 for a larger, five-bedroom Craftsman-style home. The area features a blend of homes built as early as the 1920s as well as newly constructed styles. The housing market is relatively quick in Barraud Park with homes often being sold within four to five weeks. "Everything that becomes available gets jumped on pretty quickly right now," Wells says. "There's such a low inventory of housing that if something comes on the market, people are gonna be looking at it, and there's gonna be someone jumping on it."
Extracurriculars at Booker T. Washington High
Students in Barraud Park can go to schools under the Norfolk Public Schools umbrella, including the nearby David Gilbert Jacox Elementary School and James Blair Middle School. Teens may attend Booker T. Washington High School just south of Barraud Park. The high school offers numerous extracurricular clubs and a competitive athletics program.
Play, fish and visit the Virginia Zoo
For a day outdoors, head to Barraud Park Recreation Center and practice your curveball at the community baseball field or test your layup on one of the park's three basketball courts. With picnic shelters and community grills, the park is one of the top spots in the neighborhood for locals to gather during the summer. Barraud Park sits less than a 2-mile drive from one of the top Zoos in the country. The Virginia Zoo spans 53 acres, featuring over 700 animals including lions, giraffes and rhinoceroses and hosts a regular story-time program for children. The zoo also hosts outdoor concert events during the warmer months. For more close encounters with local wildlife, neighbors can head to the Lafayette River and cast out a line for one of the area's many local species of fish, including striped bass, Atlantic croakers and even the occasional shark.
Southern flavors at locally owned restaurants
No riverside community is complete without a neighborhood seafood restaurant. Bay Seafood is a local favorite, highlighted by its catfish filets and fried scallops. Sitting just west of Barraud Park is Norfolk's Railroad District, which includes restaurants and local breweries settled inside newly refurbished warehouses. Rip Rap Brewing Co. is one of the area's top breweries while Handsome Biscuit is celebrated among Norfolk residents for its loaded hash-tots and, of course, biscuits.
Groceries are only a quick drive away for Barraud Park residents. Grab fresh meats and produce at Harris Teeter, stationed just off Colonial Avenue. To the east, a Walmart Neighborhood Market offers other everyday essentials. The neighborhood is also a 2-mile drive from MacArthur Center — a premier shopping destination in the heart of Norfolk that includes retail stores and food shops.
Interstate 264 to Virginia Beach
Positioned just 2 miles north of Interstate 264, Barraud Park residents have easy access to the highway and are only a short trip from the Virginia Beach oceanfront.
