Estabrook sits between Downtown Norfolk, about 4 miles away, and Ocean View, about 6 miles away. “It’s centrally located,” says Michelle Harris, who has worked in Norfolk as a Realtor with Keller Williams Elite 757 for eight years. The Naval Station Norfolk is around 8 miles north of the neighborhood, attracting many active-duty members and veterans to the area. “It’s a military town,” Harris says. Besides coordinating social events and maintenance, Estabrook Civic League honors those who served with a display of flags flooding the streets every Veteran’s Day.
Estabrook streets filled with variety of homes
No two homes in Estabrook are alike. Some residential streets are lined with sidewalks, while others feature grassy lawns stretching to the road. Many of those lawns are decorated with bushes and trees. The architectural styles that fill the neighborhood include bungalows, Colonial Revivals and Foursquares from the 20th century, and new traditional two-story homes built in the 2010s. Estabrook Civic League holds events for residents throughout the year, including a yard sale every September and an Annual Christmas Party. There is also plenty to do outside of the neighborhood. “There’s always something going on from April to October,” Harris says. Besides weekly Friday night events in Ocean View, Downtown Norfolk hosts several celebrations, including the Annual Parade of Nations. Representatives from every nation in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, will come together for the 71st anniversary of this parade in 2024.
Norfolk schools embrace the arts
Estabrook students are part of Norfolk City Public Schools and can start at Coleman Place Elementary School. They can then attend Norview Middle School before going to Booker T. Washington High School. All three schools receive a C-minus from Niche. Students at Booker T. Washington can enroll in the Academy of Arts, which offers concentrations in art, dance, theatre, vocal performance and instrumental music. Besides a rigorous course load focused on the arts, students can work internships and shadow professionals or attend seminars at universities, including Norfolk State University, about 3 miles from Estabrook.
Old Dominion University is about 5 miles outside the neighborhood and features seven academic programs focusing on the arts, including creative writing and cinema. These programs make up a fraction of the more than 200 undergraduate and graduate degrees at the university.
Five Points Park opens near Estabrook
Five Points Civic Park and Plaza, about 1 mile away, opened in October 2023, making it the closest park to Estabrook in the Norfolk area. The new park features a walking and biking trail, a community garden, a playground and an entertainment pavilion that the city hopes will host live music regularly throughout the year. For anyone looking for a longer hike, the 10-and-a-half-mile Elizabeth River Trail starts in Downtown Norfolk. While in the city, people can catch a hockey game at the Norfolk Scope Arena or a concert at The NorVa.

Estabrook is about 1 and a half miles from Interstate 64, which connects with Interstate 264 and carries drivers into major Virginia cities, including Virginia Beach. Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) has several bus routes that take passengers from Estabrook to Downtown and offers the Student Freedom Pass, which gives kids between 13 and 17 years old unlimited free rides until two months after their high school graduation or their 18th birthday, whichever is later. HRT also manages the Light Rail, which runs along the Elizabeth River. Norfolk International Airport is about 3 miles away and offers direct flights to more than 40 US destinations and connections to international ones.
