Established residential streets and industrial areas
At first glance, Norfolk, Virginia’s Foxhall neighborhood, located less than 10 miles southeast of Naval Station Norfolk, appears to be all business with a modern industrial park at its center. However, just around the corner, the smattering of utilitarian commercial buildings gives way to sidewalk-lined streets with leafy, mature trees and charming vintage homes. “Foxhall is a much older Norfolk neighborhood. Some of the houses date as far back as the 1920s and 1930s, when they were building Norfolk,” says Wendy Plemmons, a Norfolk resident and associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway RW Towne Realty who has sold property in Hampton Roads for 20 years. “It goes back to people wanting to live close to the naval base, and it’s still that way today.”
Older single-family homes and modern townhouses
Foxhall offers homebuyers a mix of single-family home options, from 1920s and 1930s bungalows and Cape Cods to 1950s ranch styles to newer homes with traditional aesthetics, including gabled roofs and modern features like attached garages. In addition to its single-family homes, Foxhall has a newly constructed modern townhouse community, also with traditional elements, including columned front stoops and shutters at the windows. Home sizes range from 800 to 2,300 square feet with two to four bedrooms, and sale prices fall between $150,000 and $425,000. “You’re starting to see a revitalization of the older Norfolk neighborhoods like Foxhall,” Plemmons says. “More and more of the older homes are being updated, and in some cases, older homes that are in disrepair are being torn down, and new houses are built in their place. Nine new houses have been built in Foxhall over the past five years.”
