Historic Norfolk suburb undergoing revitalization
Olde Huntersville is a historic neighborhood in Norfolk that has undergone revitalization in recent years. It's one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods and one of the few areas at the time that allowed Black families to own homes. During segregation, it was a self-sustained, economically diverse community of business owners, educators and politicians. In the 1960s, many of the neighborhood’s prominent residents left for the suburbs, leading to a decline in the community. In 1980, the Olde Huntersville Development Corporation was established to revitalize the area. The organization developed homeownership opportunities for first-time buyers, built gardens and parks and established a Tidewater Community College satellite campus. Today, some of the older homes are being renovated and new homes are being built. “It took a while to bounce back; however, now, it’s a thriving community with a lot of diversity,” says Ted Wheaton, a Realtor with RE/MAX Allegiance, who’s been selling homes in the Norfolk area for nearly 15 years.

Classic American four-square-style homes and new craftsmans
Originally, Olde Huntersville was divided into two distinct neighborhoods: Barboursville and Huntersville. Over time, these neighborhoods merged to create the present-day community. The area’s appeal lies in its 19th-century homes, which have withstood the test of time and are quite affordable compared to the rest of the surrounding area. “The city of Norfolk has created blueprint plans so that the exteriors of new construction houses match the style of the older homes in the neighborhood,” says Wheaton. Classic American four-square, remolded traditional-style and brand-new craftsman homes populate the tree-lined streets. Some homes feature driveways, while others boast attached garages. Older home styles with up to three bedrooms typically sell for $150,000 to $250,000, while newly constructed homes sell for $250,000 to $350,000.
While Olde Huntersville has a historic feel, new construction homes are also available.
