Located about 5 miles from downtown Norfolk, Sewells Gardens is a residential community that has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity and demand. Realtor Wendy Plemmons with Rose & Womble Realty Company says, “Sewells Gardens is a quaint, older and more established neighborhood with great proximity to Interstate 64.” Largely developed in the 1950s, Sewells Gardens borders tributaries of Wayne Creek and Chesapeake Bay and is close to schools, restaurants, shops and highways. One of the area’s major employers is Naval Station Norfolk, which is also the largest naval base in the world.

Plemmons says, “The neighborhood has newer developments that offer two-story properties with four bedrooms and two car garages;” A drive through the neighborhood will present one with charming bungalow-style houses with tree-filled front yards. Homes in Sewells Gardens feature long driveways and front porches, which are ideal for lingering over morning coffee. The price for a more recent home ranges from $350,000 to $450,000, while a 1940s bungalow is likely priced between $150,000 and $250,000. Resident Sarah Brown, owner of local tailor shop Sarah Brown Original, says, “It’s an older neighborhood that is peaceful and you can also see a lot of newer homes being built here.” In addition, there may be some homes located in designated Flood Zone AE, which may be required to purchase flood insurance.
