A historic town on the Lafayette River
Titustown is a historically Black neighborhood located just off the Lafayette River, which in turn branches off the Elizabeth River. Bounded by Terminal Boulevard, Titustown was established in 1911 as a working-class community with a strong sense of pride and identity. Residents are dedicated to the historic preservation of their neighborhood and culture, even as the community grows and changes. “Titustown is an up-and-coming area and has very affordable starter homes for first-time home buyers, and they love to live close to the base,” says Kristin Wyatt, a Real Estate Agent at AtCoastal Realty who has lived in the Hampton Roads area for nine years. The riverfront isn’t the only major benefit of Titustown’s location, as the community is less than 6 miles from Downtown Norfolk and about 3 miles from the Norfolk Naval Station, the world’s largest naval base.
Titustown Park's kiln room
When the weather is nice, the river offers hours of fun kayaking, boating or fishing for striped bass. Titustown Park and Recreation Center are hubs for community activity and events no matter the weather. The small park features athletic fields, while the recreation center offers a basketball court, fitness room, art and kiln rooms and more. Just outside of Titustown, Sewells Point Golf Course is an idyllic place for a game of golf or to sign up for a lesson. The course features an 18-hole PAR 71 championship golf course designed by notable architect Donald Ross.
Older homes alongside contemporary constructions
Many homes in Titustown were built in the early 20th century, though many of these older residences have been replaced with modern constructions as newer generations have moved into the area. Long-standing bungalows and ranch-style homes share the street with contemporary two-story colonial homes with garages. Sidewalks run through much of the neighborhood, making it easier to go for morning runs and evening strolls without worrying about traffic. Starter homes start at just under $200,000, especially if they need a lot of work. There’s still an invisible line in Titustown when it comes to home prices. Above the peninsula, homes max out at around $350,000, but homes on the peninsula, which tend to be larger and are either much closer to the water or have direct water access with private docks, typically cost between $500,000 and $2 million.
Building community at Titustown Recreation Center
The Titustown Civic League, a pillar in the community for decades, has been an active source of revitalization efforts to improve resident life. The league hosts events at the Titustown Recreation Center, such as their annual Thanksgiving dinner.
Essentials close to home in Titustown
Residents often head to Harris Teeter, which is just over a mile away from home, to pick up groceries and order takeout from Wan Shung Chinese Restaurant. Other restaurants like The Pancake House & Grill, which is known for its warm atmosphere and variety of breakfast foods, and Razzo, an Italian restaurant located in an old firehouse, provide plenty of options just a couple of miles from home. Downtown Norfolk offers an abundance of shopping and dining just 6 miles away, but many essentials are still close to home, from barber shops to the VCA Animal Care Center and Friendship Veterinary Hospital, which also services exotic animals, dogs and cats.
Granby High School’s wrestling legacy
Niche gives Norfolk City Public Schools a C-plus rating. Children in Titustown can attend Camp Allen Elementary School and Blair Middle School, both of which have C ratings on Niche, before moving on to Granby High School. Granby High has a B-minus rating and offers several after-school programs for students, including an engineering club, a French club and a wrestling program with a long history of wins. Billy Martin, the founder of organized wrestling in Virginia and a Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee, coached at the school for 22 years. During that time, he won 21 high school team championships and introduced a move called the “Granby Roll,” which is internationally known and used even today.
I-564 and I-64 just minutes away
Residents can catch a bus on West Little Creek Road, and Terminal Boulevard serves as Titustown’s northern border. It takes just a few minutes to reach Interstate 564, also known as Admiral Taussig Boulevard, and Interstate 64 from the neighborhood. Norfolk International Airport is only about 7 miles away, a drive that typically takes 15 minutes.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

It is an up and coming neighborhood, it is not nearly as bad as it was when I grew up there. They are building new houses, there are new businesses popping up, and there is a visual arts center right down the street.
