Getting a great start in Alameda
As Norman melts into the Oklahoma scrubland, the neighborhood of Alameda sits right on the edge. Made up of subdivisions featuring similar houses on similar tracts of land, set amongst cul-de-sacs and wide, sidewalk-lined lanes, Alameda is the new generation of suburbia. “It's a good place to find a starter home," says Kristina Moosavi, owner and broker at Re/Max Lifestyle. While some large apartment complexes offer rental housing, two-thirds of the neighborhood is single-family homeowners. Amenities throughout the neighborhood make it popular for those starter home hunters, while home design and travel ease as well as nearby health care makes it popular for those looking for a spot to age in place.
Similar architecture across the neighborhood
Homes in Alameda may fit into a few different periods of building, but the motif remains the same across the area – Traditional style, single-level living, often with zero-entry for those concerned about accessibility. Garages are the standard, facing the street, with driveways also offering additional parking. Most homes also feature privacy fencing, as trees and shrubbery are sparse and low-lying. "It's a good area for someone, like a first-time buyer or an investor, who's looking for something affordable," Moosavi says. This is reflected in the relatively narrow price range usually dictated by age – most pre-2000 homes sell in the $175,000 to $225,000 range, while newer homes featuring modern chefs’ kitchens, granite counters and en suite master baths sell in the $225,000 to $300,000 range.
Top schools provide unique programs
For pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, children in Alameda may attend either Washington or Eisenhower Elementary School, rated an A and A-minus respectively by Niche, before moving on to Irving Middle for sixth through eighth grade, which receives a B grade. Norman High School is also earns an A grade from Niche, who also names Norman High School as the Best Public High School in Cleveland County. The school is known for their robotics program – their Botball robotics team has won the national championship twice and won the Botball Global Competition in 2018 – as well as their speech and debate team that holds nine state championships in the 2000s. Local private institutions include Le Monde International School, Community Christian School, and All Saints Catholic School.
A quick drive to be in the heart of it all
Getting around the subdivisions of Alameda is fairly easy, as the sidewalk network is thorough and the flat, quiet streets lend themselves towards biking. Residents are car dependent when they head out to the greater Norman area, including running errands. “You can get to the downtown area or the Oklahoma University campus in only about 10 minutes,” says Moosavi. Similarly, while there are no houses of worship in Alameda, plenty of denominations are served in downtown Norman. Max Westheimer Airport, owned by OU, is only 4 miles away and is a public use airport – however, for commercial flights the nearest option is Will Rogers World Airport, 22 miles away in Oklahoma City.
Local faves and downtown draw
While Alameda is mostly residential, shopping and dining options sit at the edges of the neighborhood. Mostly consisting of regional and national chains, there are still some local gems to be found, like Dancing Crab, specializing in Gulf Coast-influenced seafood dishes. Mamaveca Grill serves up Peruvian and Mexican dishes in a low-key spot sporting south-of-the-border flair. Folks who are looking for a night out might head into downtown Norman, where Main Street offers up a dining and shopping district with local craft breweries, coffee shops, restaurants and retail. Outreach Thrift Norman in Alameda stocks its shelves with lightly used name brand clothing and housewares, perfect for the bargain hunter. For everyday needs, Walmart and Homeland provide groceries and more.
Indoor and outdoor recreation keeps bodies and minds engaged
Green spaces abound in and around Alameda, such as Crestland Park in the heart of the neighborhood, where there's a playground with a picnic pavilion and walking path. Royal Oaks Park is a bit smaller, with walking trails that lead around the nearby pond, along with a playground and soccer field. The Norman East branch of the public Pioneer Library System, winner of the Oklahoma Library Association's Library of the Year award, provides outstanding programs and services that have impacted the lives of people in the community.
Boomer Sooner and more
A residential haven, Alameda doesn’t host events within the neighborhood. Downtown Norman and Oklahoma University provide plenty to do – turnout to OU football and basketball in particular makes Norman the center of activity not just for the region, but for the state during the seasons. The Norman Farm Market runs Saturdays throughout the year, while the Norman Music Festival – a Must Do event on the Norman calendar – runs three days in the end of April and attracts national music acts.
A hub of medical care
Alameda is home to several care facilities that both treat those in the region as well as provide job opportunities for the residents of Alameda. Norman Regional Hospital, providing 24-hour emergency care, is only 2 miles outside of the neighborhood. Griffin Memorial Hospital, a 120-bed acute psychiatric hospital, and the J.D. McCarty Center for children with developmental disabilities are located within Alameda. Oklahoma Veterans Center, providing skilled care and treatment for Veterans, is located in the northern portion as well.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
