Ranch-style homes with brick accents
Single-family homes and apartment buildings make up nearly 70 percent of the property mix in Southwest Norman, and about half the residents are renters. “A lot of investors buy around there for long-term and short-term rentals,” says Dita Sartain, Realtor with West + Main Homes. Buyers choose from 1970s ranch-style homes accented with brick, renovated bungalows dating to the 1930s, or contemporary two-story builds. Mature oak and maple trees accent patches of lawn, providing shade to paved driveways and built-in garages. Small bungalows and ranch-style houses might cost $175,000 to $325,000, while contemporary builds fetch prices in the $350,000 to $500,000 range. Prices start at $100,000 to $200,000 for two-bedroom condos. In contrast to Southeast Norman, the neighborhood on the eastern side of campus, this area also offers large luxury homes in upscale communities like Sutton Woods, which can command prices from $750,000 to $1 million. That said, buyers seeking a rural vibe might want to check out Southeast Norman, as the landscape there features large swaths of woodland and open fields.Sports fields at Rotary Park
Rotary Park boasts a convenient location next to Jackson Elementary School. Walking trails zigzag past basketball and tennis courts, picnic tables and a playground. Spectator benches flank the sports fields, and russet-colored stone shelters offer picnic and gathering spaces for large groups. Across Highway 9, The Trails Golf Club invites members to tee off on its 18-hole course.Climbing the educational ladder to Norman High School
Southwest Norman is home to several schools. Students can start at Jackson Elementary School, which receives a B from Niche. Alcott Middle School, which gets a B-plus, is less than a mile from Jackson. Just outside the neighborhood is A-minus-rated Norman High School, which features solid athletics and a fine arts program.Football and concerts at Campus Corner
With OU and the historic Campus Corner next door, some residents can walk to events like the Norman Music Festival and May Fair Arts Festival, both held in the spring. Crimson Friday Concerts herald the start of football weekends as live musicians rock the stage at the intersection of White Street and Asp Avenue. The Saturday games often pack Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium with up to 80,000 spectators. “Game day is huge, so that’s always a fun vibe,” Lovelace says. Residents should be aware that game days also make it hard to find parking in the area.Bike lanes leading to the OU campus
Buses on EMBARK Norman routes stop on West Lindsey Street on their way to and from the campus. Many stops are conveniently positioned near restaurants and shopping centers. West Lindsey Street also includes bike lanes, which are more ubiquitous on the streets surrounding the campus. Commuters can follow Highway 9 for about 3 miles to Norman Regional Nine, the closest major hospital. Interstate 35 borders the neighborhood and leads to downtown Oklahoma City, 20 miles away. The trip to Will Rogers World Airport is about 22 miles.Barbecue and burgers on West Lindsey Street
Most commercial activity is concentrated around West Lindsey Street, a thoroughfare that stretches from the interstate to the OU campus. Shopping centers, fast-food chains and auto parts stores line both sides of the four-lane highway. Cars pull up to Classic 50’s Drive-Inn for burgers, onion rings and the classic slushie known as the “Eskimo Frosty.” Smoked brisket and hot links are served on red-and-white checkered paper at regional chain Ray’s BBQ. Legend’s Restaurant is an upscale yet unpretentious date night spot featuring live piano. Residents also head to Homeland, the grocery store with an onsite gas station on West Lindsey. Campus Corner is within walking distance of most homes and features a buzzy shopping and dining scene.Sooner students and noise levels
Oklahoma is in Tornado Alley, where the threat of storm damage can raise homeowners’ insurance premiums. And because the college is so close, noise levels in the neighborhood can be high, especially around Chautauqua Avenue, which is less than a block from campus.
