North Andover offers bucolic surroundings and a variety of community events
With farm-to-table dinners, concerts in a historic church and sports games at the local college, North Andover offers residents the choice to stay busy or to enjoy opportunities for solitude. Despite being less than 30 miles from downtown Boston, “It’s a bucolic setting with plenty of open space,” says Sharon Coskren, Realtor with Leading Edge Real Estate and lifetime resident of North Andover. “It’s still commutable into Boston, though, especially for those who only go in two to three days a week.” Buyers will find a wide variety of housing options, ranging from entry-level multifamily living to large, custom-built homes. Area families can send their children to North Andover Public Schools — a district prized for its dedication to accommodating all learning styles and needs.

Outdoor concerts and events at the North Andover Town Common
The North Andover Town Common is the town’s focal point. Each May, the North Andover Sheep Shearing Festival is held there. “It’s probably our biggest event. There are all sorts of booths and merchants,” Coskren says. In summer months, the town puts up a stage in the common, and children can come in the mornings to watch juggling performances and magic shows. There are several in-town venues that host concert series as well. In the summer, there are outdoor concerts in the common on Sundays and mid-week at the Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens. Each month, there are also Crossroads Music Series performances held in the 1836 Meeting House of North Andover. This landmark church building serves as a meeting space for members of several faith groups, including Unitarian Universalists, Buddhists and a local Jewish congregation. In fall and winter, sports fans can head to Merrimack College to catch hockey and basketball games. “Tickets for both are hard to come by, though, because of their winning records,” Coskren says.

Whim Dinners at Smolak Farms and quality grocery options at Butcher Boy and Market Basket
With several restaurants in North Andover and even more in Andover, locals have many options within a 2-mile drive of their homes. Coskren says that Shadi’s Restaurant and Lounge, a Mediterranean-style eatery, is a popular spot in North Andover and that La Fina is worth the trip into Andover. “People come from all over to go to Whim Dinners at Smolak Farms,” Coskren says. The farm-to-table meals are prepared by chefs from around the region, and each menu is centered around ripe, seasonal produce. Visitors also enjoy the farm’s hay rides and seasonal apple and pumpkin picking. Locals can do their weekly shopping at the Market Basket on Winthrop Avenue and head to Butcher Boy for their high-quality meat. To find specialty gifts and clothing, Andover, less than 2 miles from most homes in town, has a walkable downtown with plenty of boutiques.
