Midcentury suburbs between Merrick and Massapequa

Entering the small Nassau County of North Bellmore, visitors might think they’re seeing double. They are in a couple of ways – the northern half of the Bellmores is as much a bastion of classic Long Island suburbia as its waterfront southern namesake and its neighbor along the Southern State Parkway, North Merrick. “Merrick-Bellmore is like Wantagh. You can’t tell the difference if you cross the road – it's the same thing,” says Christopher Kaufman, owner of Realty Advisors and a longtime North Bellmore resident. “People come here because it’s close to the city, an easy train ride. Everything’s just right here, you can get anywhere.” Youth athletics are major connectors between the northern Bellmore-Merricks, while an active chamber of commerce and commercial districts bolster community life between the Bellmores. Small but important details differentiate the hamlet from its neighbors, including the public schools attended by its youngest students and a distinctive collection of favorite local businesses and restaurants. But overall, what attracts homebuyers to North Bellmore are the same things that bring new residents to South Shore suburbs from Merrick to Massapequa: great schools, well-kept blocks of single-family homes and a tangle of commuter highways that open access from the farthest beaches of Suffolk County to the skyscraper skyline of New York City.

Classic midcentury single-family homes from $600,000 in North Bellmore

On sidewalk-lined blocks and gently winding subdivisions, much of North Bellmore is full of the Minimal Traditional, ranch-style, split-level and colonial homes that rose up in the 1940s through 1960s during Long Island’s suburbanization. Most of the mix of simple, midcentury single-family homes in North Bellmore sell for $600,000 to $900,000, though fixer uppers can go for less. New Traditional homes built since the 1980s and especially large and highly renovated older homes sell for $850,000 to $1.7 million. Magnet broadcasting coursework at highly rated Mepham High School

Kids start off attending one of five elementary schools in the North Bellmore School District, including Newbridge Road School which earns an A-minus from Niche. After sixth grade, students join the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, attending A-rated Grand Avenue Middle School and A-plus-rated Wellington C. Mepham High School. A diverse range of AP courses and extracurriculars help account for Mepham High’s popularity, as do its unique broadcasting program and participation in a district-wide engineering pathway. Through these specialized programs of study, students enroll in set coursework and gain hands-on experience in broadcast journalism or college credit in STEAM topics respectively.

Southern State Parkway and LIRR commuting

Despite the sidewalks that connect the hamlet, foot traffic isn’t especially common in North Bellmore. “It’s not really a walking town, you just have to drive everywhere,” says Anthony LaBella, a real estate agent with eXp Realty and longtime Bellmore resident who specializes throughout the Merricks and Bellmores. “But you can access highways quickly, get right on the Southern State to commute.” The Southern State Parkway cuts through North Bellmore on an underpass, starting many commuters on a 33-mile drive into Manhattan. While public transit is not the most popular way of getting around North Bellmore, a couple of Nassau Inter-County Express bus routes pass through along Jerusalem Avenue. Of higher concern is boarding the Long Island Rail Road, and riders have a 50-minute trip to Penn Station from the nearest station in neighboring Bellmore. The nearest hospital is Nassau University Medical Center, sprawling in a complex of connected emergency room and specialty office buildings just north of the hamlet in East Meadow. Commercial flights take off further away, about 16 miles west at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

North Bellmore/North Merrick youth sports and nearby South Shore beaches

Colorful championship signs hang from the fences surrounding Gunther Field, celebrating the Little League North Bellmore/North Merrick Rebel and Lady Rebel teams that dominated on the baseball diamond in years past. Farther down Bellmore Avenue, the North Bellmore Public Library hosts craft and fitness classes, inviting attendees across age groups to do some Zumba dancing or perfect a new knitting pattern. Nearby, players battle for control of the puck on the Bellmore-Merrick Roller Hockey youth league’s home court. Jones Beach is about 9 miles away down Wantagh State Parkway, a lively hub for beach days on sandy Atlantic Ocean beaches, adventurous afternoons braving the high ropes course and plenty of summertime concerts in the bandshell. A seasonal beach parking pass from the Town of Hempstead gives North Bellmore residents access to Lido and Point Lookout beaches, both one barrier island to the west.

Shopping and dining on Jerusalem Avenue and Jerusalem Road

While not as packed as the commercial strips lining Sunrise Highway to the south, Jerusalem Avenue brings a small commercial district through the center of North Bellmore. National brands like Stop & Shop stock essentials, as do small businesses and more niche chains like the North Shore Farms supermarket. “I like that a lot of the stores are small family-owned. You know the same pizza guy for 20 years, you know the same guy in the liquor store, you know the same guy in the smokes shop. It’s not all corporate run. Sure, you have your CVS and whatnot, but it’s a lot of family-owned stuff,” Kaufman says. Jerusalem Road to the north is a quieter commercial road where diners stop into Elisa’s Restaurant, a classic family-owned Italian spot that has been a local favorite for more than 20 years. Further south in Bellmore, patrons can find dozens more main street-style shops along Bedford Avenue and car-centered strips along Sunrise Highway. Several diverse houses of worship are scattered in and around the hamlet, including Grace Lutheran Church, Temple B’nai Torah and Jaame Masjid Bellmore.

Festivals and car shows in the Bellmores

The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores connects business districts between the neighboring hamlets and also hosts popular annual events that connect community members. The Bellmore Family Street Festival is without contest the most popular, a lively block party full of vendors and carnival-style entertainment that stretches from the Bellmore LIRR station down the village’s shopping district for four days each September. Gearheads mingle at the Bellmore Station on Friday nights from March through October, showing off vintage cars at the Bellmore Friday Night Car Show.
