A close neighborhood experience near the heart of the DMV
Framed by nature preserves and the Capital Beltway, North Chevy Chase appeals to those searching for a slower-paced community without sacrificing convenient access to bustling urban areas. “It’s a little village surrounded by the large metro areas,” says Meredith Margolis, an Executive Vice President at Compass who has served the D.C. area since 2006. “People move there for the access to 495 and green space.” Though the neighborhood is residential, some of Bethesda’s best restaurants and stores are under 10 minutes away, and children are zoned to A-rated schools in Montgomery County. Plus, with its five-member council, North Chevy Chase is among the smallest incorporated municipalities in Maryland, and the small local government fosters community engagement.

20th-century Colonial Revivals and newly built homes
“It is not uncommon for people to stay in houses here for 20 years or more,” says Theresa Helfman Taylor, a Realtor with Keller Williams Capital Properties who has served the area for 15 years. Quiet, residential streets lined with mature trees and flowering shrubbery define North Chevy Chase. Unlike other neighborhoods in Chevy Chase, homebuyers can find some properties for under $1 million. Split-levels and ranches built in the 1950s start at $800,000, but most cost around $1 million. Colonial Revivals, also built in the mid-1900s, are priced between $1.1 and $1.3 million. Newly built homes appear in sleek New Traditional styles — townhouses usually cost around $1.5 million, while single-family homes cost as much as $2.3 million.

Explore native habitats at Woodend Nature Sanctuary
North Chevy Chase has more green space than other Chevy Chase neighborhoods, so residents have plenty of opportunities to spend time outside. Kids play baseball and climb at the playground at North Chevy Chase Park, and members can cool off on humid summer days at the pool operated by the North Chevy Chase Swimming Pool Association. Woodend Nature Sanctuary is the neighborhood’s crown jewel, a 40-acre nature preserve operated by a non-profit organization. Residents can explore forests, ponds and gardens filled with native plants on a wheelchair-accessible trail or attend educational programs at the outdoor amphitheater. For longer walks, locals can pick up the Rock Creek Trail off of Jones Mill Road.

Authentic Portuguese dishes at Tavira Restaurant
There aren’t any restaurants or stores in North Chevy Chase, but there are plenty of options within 2 miles of the neighborhood. In the morning, residents can grab an acai bowl from Playa Bowls. For dinner, they can head to Manoli Canoli for Italian dishes or Tavira Restaurant to enjoy authentic Portuguese dishes and Mediterranean wine. Amazon Fresh is an innovative grocery store with a virtual cart system located nearby, but residents can also drive to Trader Joe’s or Harris Teeter. Whether they’re looking for home décor or a new piece to add to their closets, residents head to Bethesda Row to shop.

Drive down Connecticut Avenue or merge onto the Beltway
Commuters can drive 8 miles south on Connecticut Avenue to Downtown Washington, D.C., or travel 3 miles southwest to get to Bethesda. They can merge onto Interstate 495 or the Capital Beltway, which carves through the northern portion of the neighborhood, to drive throughout the DMV area. There are bus stops operated by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation along main roads, and residents can travel about 2 miles southwest to catch the Metro at the Bethesda station.
Admire plants and art at the Village Spring Fair
“There’s an Independence Day parade and block parties in the summer,” Margolis says. The neighborhood has community events like the Village Spring Fair, a plant show and art show where residents can enjoy live music while they shop for native plants and admire their neighbors’ artwork. Residents share their favorite summer recipes at the village’s annual 4th of July block party and potluck, and they can also gather for conferences and educational programs at the Woodend Nature Sanctuary. The neighborhood benefits from its central location as well, as residents can head toward Bethesda or Downtown Washington, D.C., to join the greater DMV community for large events.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
