Military and a large employer draw people to this North Chicago neighborhood
About 40 miles north of downtown Chicago, Argonne Heights is only a few miles from beachfront access along Lake Michigan. But that’s not the main reason why people live here. “I’ve worked with a lot of Navy families who move here to be close to Naval Station Great Lakes,” says Liz Scheffler, a broker/owner with Century 21 Circle with nearly 40 years of experience. Argonne Heights, a predominately residential community with sizable midcentury homes, neighbors the naval base. While many of the base's 14,000 recruits and students live on the installation, some choose to live in the nearby community, living alongside people who work for another high-profile employer close to home. “Many people also work at Abbott Laboratories,” Scheffler adds, referring to the multinational medical healthcare corporation that's based in North Chicago and has a giant research campus about 3 miles west of Argonne Heights.
North Chicago housing improvement plan
North Chicago is just outside the North Shore area of the Chicago suburbs. “Any further south, and you’re into the more affluent sections,” Scheffler says. The house price range is between $175,000 and $300,000, with ranch-style, tri-level and minimal traditional homes primarily from the mid-20th century. “There’s been a program from the city of North Chicago the last 5 to 7 years focusing on improving properties,” she says. “Investors have come in and flipped houses. Up until then, North Chicago had been seen as a second-class area. It’s an up-and-coming area now.”
Houses of worship in the neighborhood include Christian Valley Missionary Baptist, Mount Sinai Baptist, Prayer Garden Church of God in Christ, Greater St. James Temple Church of God in Christ and the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
The neighborhood rates a 5 on the CAP crime index from 1 to 10. Four is the national average, and some violent crimes are rated a 6 in Argonne Heights.
The home price ranges are from $175,000 to $300,000 in Argonne Heights.

Groceries at the Great Lakes Commissary
The naval base’s influence is seen with a close grocery store option on Green Bay Road. Great Lakes Commissary is a supermarket, and the Navy Exchange department store is next door in the same shopping center. Both are for military members and veterans. Grocery shopping for those without a military connection is about 3 miles to the northwest at Aldi or Walmart. Restaurant options include Los Altos, serving authentic Mexican dishes. There are a few tables inside that fill up quickly during lunch and dinner. Chicago-style hot dogs, gyros and Italian beef are on the menu at 5 Points, with TVs inside and outdoor seating during warm weather.
